I too just had an Eastern Black Swallowtail eclose yesterday. And I had been waiting 8 months. I was concerned that mine was out there all alone. I hope he or she finds some other swallowtails to hang out with.

This thread is very interesting. Here I was thinking that maybe they chose that box because of the extra large vent in the top (perhaps to make feeding multiples easier?). But ken3592 may be onto something. I hadn't even noticed that that box is indeed shallower than most. Maybe that's why they chose it. I will be trying a shallower box next year for the TRES. I wonder if shallower, but deeper would also be attractive to them and help keep the hatchlings out of reach of avian predators.

Sorry haven't gotten back to this. Yes it is under my porch. No the parents never dived-bombed me. I'm in and out a lot too. they are at the end of the porch which is 22ft. long. I had so much fun watching them. Hope they come back next yr. This is the 2nd. yr. for them!! I would talk to them every time I went out and while the babies were growing. They just got used to me I guess.
