Mom Wood Duck is busy

She is singing and eating egg shells like crazy today.(We have a camera in the box)

I know she has more than 20 eggs under her. Will try and record them when they jump and can get a better count when they jump.

Second box is due to fledge in just a few more days.

Here is a video of Mom today-eating the egg shell of one of the ducklings. If she eats all of the egg shells, she will be one full duck.
Wish us luck at getting the video of her and the little one's tomorrow.

That is a fascinating video Connie. It appears so difficult for her to eat them, and yet she is determined. Love your videos! Can hardly wait to see them jump this year. Do they only have one clutch per year?

relocating bees from wood duck house?

After removing the bottom, I shook the house [ knock] over empty frames, there is no need to locate the queen, you check the hive in a couple of day's or weeks, [you can have a virgin queen] then see if you have a laying queen. >>I have concerns about getting the house down from the tree due to its weight.. This is what I have done... . . >>Do you think it likely that I'd have any success just putting a box nearby to attract the bees if they swarm again in the spring?Perhaps?, best to put lures further up on trees and not too close to your hives, I have build a swarm catch platform on top of a fuel stand.

Yay!!! Wonderful news Connie. Wow, I hadn't thought of eggs freezing. You'd think that the moms would know enough to know when to lay them so that this would not occur. Gosh, I sure would love to see this in action.~~Angie

BLESS YOU for sending me the link to the Wood Duck clip highlights-both DuBois and I watched it a few minutes ago. Gracious-I didn't think that last duckling would make it. The link is so cool-it shows two cameras-one of the box and pond (so you can see them after they jump) and one of the inside of the box.-you can see them climb up and out http://www.filefactory.com/file/ag1eb41/n/WoodDuck-2_2Cam_avi I had to download a free copy of File Factory Basic. At first I couldn't get the videos but this last HP computer and Firefox browser automatic upgrade suddenly made me able to not only see your clips but see other links I got from Twitter-like the one to the live peregrine falcon chick cam at http://www2.fiberpipe.net/falconcam/live.asp live loon cam at http://www.mnbound.com/live-loon-cam/ Also I can now hear my favorite (French/Creole, from Haiti-lot's of original West Indian music) radio station at http://radio4veh.org/radio_plus/radio_4veh.html

Selling my mom's house - has wood panelling, non-working shower

You need to make it a little better than its competition, whatever you decide. If it's an as-is, it should be the best as-is in the area. If it's a fixed-up ranch house, it should be the best fixed up ranch house in the area. I personally prefer to fix places up before I sell them. There's value in any work you do. You can figure out what a house like that would sell for in its current state, and then what it would sell for if you painted it, refinished the hardwood floors, fixed the bathrooms. I bet it would be worth fixing. If you could post pictures, we could give you ideas. I agree with what someone said about painting the paneling creamy white, not builder's white. I've painted paneling before and used a warm cream color. It looked fantastic. Do a careful job on the paneling otherwise it will look like cheap painted paneling. Use the right primer. What state are you in?

Kendra, according to the CORNELL Lab of Ornithology --The Wood Duck is the only North American duck that regularly produces two broods in one year.--
We have second batches, but I always thought they were the ducks that lost their first batch.
Mom is keeping them warm right now and have not heard her eat any egg shell this morning, so hopefully the little ones will all be strong enough to climb the wall when she does decide to take them out into the Big World.

Sorry I do not have video (that's hubby's job and he has been to busy to put it into the computer).
Mom left a little after 11 am yesterday and 24 babies jump right behind her. She was on the pond for about 1/2 hour then took them up on the bank and rested for 15 min. and then off into the woods she went.
There were 4 eggs left in the box, so she could have had 28 little one if they had all hatched.
