Wood Ducks Hatched

Our first wood duck of the season hatched out 8 little ones yesterday and today they all climbed-and jumped into the pond.

We have a camera in the box, so we could see inside and then actually see them from the house as they landed in the pond.

The first one's came out bing, bing, bing and then the last one-# 8 climbed and fell and repeated that about 6-8 times, I thought for sure he was not going to make it, then he found a burst of energy and finally jumped and off they went, but he was really dragging behind. I hope mama took off for the woods and then gave him time to rest or I fear he will be left behind. I was just glad he made it out of the box and I didn't have to foster him.

There was 12 eggs only 8 hatched and 3 left in the box-not sure where the other one went.

Wish the photo were better, but it is what I have.
Viewing it on our tv was so much better.

Look on the Internet to find out if Magpie ducks will incubate (set on) their own eggs. As long as they are not in with a lot of other birds, I suspect that she would succeed in hatching her own. Sometimes they lay an egg every other day, until they reach what they consider to be a full clutch. Before they are actually starting to set on the eggs seriously, you'll notice that she will start building the nest and lining it with fluff from her own breast. This is, of course, if she will set on her own. I reckon that those eggs will be good for at least two weeks, while she gathers more. If you decide to use an incubator, I'd recommend one with a thermostat, hydrometer, forced air and egg turner; that is if you can afford it. I used to purchase the Styrofoam cheapo incubators, about every 12 months. They would get contaminated during hatching and after a couple of uses there was no way to use them successfully, as the eggs would become contaminated and cause sick, deformed chicks. Ducks require a bit more humidit'y for incubation, so you'd have to research that. I have hatched duck eggs under a broody hen. That works. But once they hatch, you have to take the ducklings and raise them yourself. The hen doesn't "speak the same language" as the ducklings. They don't communicate well and the ducklings abandon the hen after less than a day. Hope this helps, George

if not too late... don't have to separate if you have a large enough pen drake shouldn't attack them, but be on guard for possibility our experience is those eggs hatch on the morning of the 28th day of incubating mother duck hen is efficient and will stay on the nest with the ducklings until the last one is hatched or if separated by more than 24 hours will take off the ducklings and leave any eggs on the nest. Make sure if ducklings have access to water they also have a ramp so they can climb out. The adult ducks won't help them and their shorter legs don't either. It is easier for them to enter than get out. Improvise with what you have making sure that it's not a slick surface. Blocks of wood screwed or nailed together on either side of the pool like a step up & over & down work as does wire covered wood ramps. Wet wood is slick for them and slimes up quickly in a duck environment. Watch out for sharp wire edges that could injure them. Fluffy down isn't as efficient as preened adult feathers, so they will get wet and need to dry off.

It's been a while since the last post on this subject but I am in need of some imformation regarding a chicken hatching duck eggs. I bought twelve fertile mixed breed duck eggs off of ebay hoping to get my broody jersey giant hen to maybe hatch some out. All's fine so far; she's doing her job (it's only been a few days). She's four years old and has never even seen a rooster only her bunk mate she was raised with (a red sex-link). what I need to know first is why is she exibiting this behavior now and to such an extreme that she's been in the nesting box almost constantly for the last month and a half. Is she going to quit on me before any of the six eggs can hatch? The second thing I need to know is how successful am I going to be hatching out any of the remaining six in my homemade incubator when I am having trouble maintaining a constant temperature and humidity at least the first three days (I think I got a handle on it now) but has the damage already been done (too soon to candle). What are my chances as opposed to Isabel's (the hen) in getting any duck babies to hatch? Oh, one more thing about Isabel, she is a free range hen who would only come in the coop to eat and put herself to bed at nightfall and all I had to do is be there to close the door. Now she acts broody and strange when she once was a chatty, personable, happy girl. Was this the wrong tact to take, giving her fertile eggs? The reason I choose duck eggs is I didn't want to take the chance of getting a rooster (don't like 'em).

Humidity consistency is very important. I've always mist the eggs after turning them starting about the 8Th day. According to my notes the humidity was 85% & Temp 99.5F from day 1 to day 25 there after increase humidity to 95% and drop temp to 98.5F for the last 3 days. Turn the eggs 3 x day first week, then 5 x day second week, then 7 x day to day 25-finish the last 3 days without turning. when you candle the eggs at 28 days, you should be able to see 3/5Th dark 2/5 should appear light. The dark side should have an irregular shape and the bill should be pointing up into the lighter side. You should be able to see movement and hear peeping. All birds can lay eggs with or without a male; so the answer is no. There are a lot of things you'll need to know before the next batch is set. How to store the eggs before setting them-What temp to store at-Turning the stored eggs-to clean or not to clean (how to do it correctly)-how long they can be stored? How to prepare the incubator-cleaning/disinfecting it? Washing your hands before and after handling the eggs. As you see the questions can go on and on. Google "hatching Duck Eggs". That is so AWESOME! I keep saying I'll do nest cams, but I've never done them. Our Wood Ducks nest back in the woods, I dunno where, and I always tip-toe around and try not to scare them when I'm near the pond.

I have the little game cam set up, but animals have to come very close to trigger the sensor

Neighbors nest had 13 live ones, 4 climbed out, but the remainder are still in the box. He wants to 'help' them out. Should we? or will they eventually climb out on their own? My instinct says leave them alone & they will get out when they are ready. But then I am a human mother and my instincts are not 'ducky'.

My guess is that if Mom is not around calling to them, that she is gone. Ours only left the box, because Mom was calling,
she left the box earlier in the day and they never tried to climb out.
My guess is that if they want them to live, they will have to be caretakers.
