snakes in blue bird house

I just discovered two large king snakes (I think) in a house along a fence behind my house where blue birds had been nesting. I knocked the top off of the house to check before I knocked the house down. The male and female birds are constantly going back to the location where the box was. I do not know if the female had already laid eggs in the house or if they were still building the nest. I would love to put up another house for future blue birds, but I do not want to risk snakes getting them. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to build a better/more secure house for them that may be safer?

Please visit the Sialis website for complete information on hosting Bluebirds. You definitely don't want snakes or other critters getting into your Bluebird house. The box should be mounted on a pole with a predator guard. Great instructions can be found in the link below.

Well got up to get ready to go to work. Came to check on things on garden web and down on my family room floor was a SNAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So call my husband and he was to far to get home . So called the neighbor. She didnt believe me at first but came over any way. It had put its head in a glue trap and was stuck. Caught it up in a butterfly net of the grandkids and took it outside and put in a bucket. The man at the extentsion office said was definatly a copperhead. Have I mentioned that I Hate snakes and am afraid of them? So now am wondering if should sell the house or hang on . Judy

We've had a blue jay pair in our rhododendron. I've been watching since it's also about 6 feet from our front door, up against our house. I got mama a birdbath and food, which she never used. So her eggs hatched and I watched daddy feed her, and then her feed her babies. This was so precious. But now they're all gone. Could they be renesting? I've had my field cam on them but it's not revealing if daddy or mommy transported the babies. I havent seen any critters either. I was really hoping I would get to see the babies grow. I feel bad bc I am not sure if her babies made it. 😔

You did the right thing. They will adjust to it as long as you don't move it more than 10 ft per day or so. I would like to invite you to join the bluebird nut cafe forum. Are there any nests in the boxes? I also think they are Tree Swallows. If they are in there from last fall or summer they are probably babies that could not get out of the boxes. Tres need a ladder if you will to help them fledge from the nest. All that needs to be done is to make some deep scratches or kerfs on the inside of the box leading up to the hole to help them climb out.
