How lucky!!! They don't usually use nest boxes just natural cavities so you really don't want to disturb them. The eggs hatch 12 to 14 days after incubation starts. If you watch closely you can usually tell b/c the parents will be shuttling food to the babies once they hatch. Then it is another 24 to 27 days until they fledge. Not long at all!!! Save them please!! Thanks to the starlings not many of them ever hatch. Cathy

don't know about your woodpeckers but i have a pair of lewis's woodpeckers who have nested here last 3 years. i also have lots of orioles and i put out fruit and jelly and watermelon for the orioles, the young Lewis's love the jelly and watermelon and eat lots of fruit and they come back every year. i also have downeys and hairys and flickers that use the same feeders as the Lewis's

There isn't any waste with the sunflower seed heads. I especially like that. Two weeks can pass w/o the need to change them. Tom, good point. I'll keep that in mind. I don't think I'd of thought that. I grew 500 sunflowers this year and I'm bumping that up to 2000 at least for next year. Having a lot of land surely helps. Best Regards, Dax

I have Red Bellied Woodpeckers and Downey Woodpeckers in my yard almost daily and on occasionally we see Red Headed Woodpeckers and Hairy Woodpeckers, although I have not yet been fortunate enough to get photos of the later two. I am attaching a photo of a Red bellied Woodpecker on the side of our Maple tree as well as another shot of it on the suet feeder. I am also attaching a photo of the Downey Woodpecker on the suet feeder to give a comparison of their physical size. To offer a reference for size, the mesh of the suet feeder is 1/2" squares.
