Those are scary. Please do not feed them to anyone as they may end up looking like that when done.

If the later fruit on this plant look the same -- i.e. fruit which did not set when temps were low -- it may be a mutation. Marianna's sells a tomato called Pacara which apparently is always catfaced.

If what I read is correct, temps have to below 50 to cause catfacing, we haven't had temps below 60 since these started blooming. AGAIN...It's only happening on 1 out of 24 plants all from the same planting, all from the same nursery!

this is one i grew a couple years ago with colder temps.

Barry - the 'why' is often a combination of environmental factors. They include a range of air temps, plant location, soil/water/nutrient pockets, insect activity, wind direction, rain, and garden gnomes. Mr. Stripey is known for being weird in many respects and so it attracts gnomes.

It is just one of those things that happen now and then when all the contributing factors line up in a row. It is all beyond your control. Call it one of the mysteries of fused blooms, sticky pollen, timing, and magic. Enjoy your tomatoes, weird ones and all, and don't sweat it.
