mealworms available

I have noticed some of you are not being able to find mealworms. I just talked to my supplier and they have a good supply. I use Southeastern Insectaries in Perry, GA, tele 877-967-6777 (no web site). I believe they only guarantee live delivery if you ship overnight this time of year. They use DHL. Some people have still opted for priority mail and some arrived dead. I have had really great service with them.

Some lady is advertising meal worm castings on Craigslist for $15 for a 35 pound bag. I had read this thread before I went to her house so asked her if she had gotten her castings from the place in Compton that I think you were hinting about, and that I read you can get it for free. She said yes her castings were from that major mealworm producer but they weren't free. I offered her $13 for the bag and she said OK. When I got home I weighed the bag and it was only 28 pounds, not 35, and the bag said hybrid wheat on it, but I figured they were just recycling the bags so didn't care about that. My question, is the supplier Rainbow farms in Compton or Long Beach, and are the castings really free if one goes direct to them, or if you have to pay how much is a bag and what size is it? The castings were very light and looked sort of like termite or furniture beetle sawdust if you ever saw that. I give mealworms to wild lizards. I have kept them in the fridge for months when the lizards stop eating during the winter. We have a shortage here too(Australia) but it seems suspicious and I wonder if they are being described as possible human food in the face of all the movements to replace meat. Registering them as food products edible by human would make them very expensive and the big industries would be locking down the supply and possibly even killing off what they cant control. Whatever is happening shouldn't be. Meal worms are easily bred insects and should be available in massive numbers. I know I might be totally wrong but I dont think so

I never give them anything that is bigger than medium. I ordered small ones once, but they didn't like them very much. I never realized birds could be so picky. They are as bad as my cat. For now I'm spacing out the mealies I have and will dip into my breeding box if need be for a few each day. I ordered some waxworms to try. Of course I realize that these birds were fine without me and my mealworms, and they'll be fine without me. Heck, if they could just eat a few mosquitos they'd be stuffed. Keith, when you feed the mealies you should leave them out of the fridge to feed, the apple peals need to have some apple on them too, not just the peals as they need the moisture from the apple. Mine eat the apple and leave the peals. I have kept mine in the fridge from October to April and they have stayed alive. You just need to take them out like once every three weeks or so and feed them or they will die. When you feed them you leave them out of the fridge for several hours so they can wake up enough to eat, I usually leave them out a whole day but not overnight. They also eat the wheatbran or oatmeal that they are in but they need apple/carrots/lettuc etc for moisture. Do not leave the moisture source in them when you put them back in the fridge though or they could mold and kill the mealies. Donna

Ok, I called and ordered some this morning, hopefully I will have them tomorrow. The price is a little more than posted but still reasonable. It was around $22 for 5000 or $40 for 10,000. They have medium sized mealworms. They only guarantee live delivery if you use overnight shipping which is between $20-$30 depending where you are located. I was going to see if they had waxworms too but totally forgot to ask, I have been getting some at Walmart though. I am hoping Sunshine will have more available like they said the first week in July.

Those are GREAT prices! I've been getting mine from my local WBU and they are $16 per thousand. I hope they don't run out.

Yikes! That still is a good price. I paid $83.00 for 4K. They arrived great but I fear I was WAY overcharged my first time ordering.

Just thought I would let you know I got the mealworms this morning and they are great. I didn't even see a dead one in there. They are medium sized but all seem that size not alot of little ones. Next day shipping was a bit pricey $35!! However it still came to just over $11 per 1000 with the shipping so it wasn't that bad, not great but hey gotta get them where you can! I have never done the next day shipping before, it was pretty nice to call yesterday and get them this morning! We were gone this morning but I left a note on the door for the DHL driver to leave them in the garage which was cool yet.

Glad you got your shipments. I called and ordered another 5000 last night and discovered the price had gone up. I checked around and it appears everyone has. The shipping is expensive but I lost one shipment in this heat last year so guess I'll just have to pay. I'm afraid I'll need to cut back on the amount I feed them every day. I was putting out 200-300 mealies a day but I will have to cut back to 100-150. It is just getting too expensive.
I have noticed one of the last brood is still coming to the feeder to get his share. Dad will usually try to keep him away from the meal worms as best he can so he and Mom can feed the latest brood up in the trees.
