mealworms available

I have noticed some of you are not being able to find mealworms. I just talked to my supplier and they have a good supply. I use Southeastern Insectaries in Perry, GA, tele 877-967-6777 (no web site). I believe they only guarantee live delivery if you ship overnight this time of year. They use DHL. Some people have still opted for priority mail and some arrived dead. I have had really great service with them.

Mealworm castings...
Q

Some lady is advertising meal worm castings on Craigslist for $15 for a 35 pound bag. I had read this thread before I went to her house so asked her if she had gotten her castings from the place in Compton that I think you were hinting about, and that I read you can get it for free. She said yes her castings were from that major mealworm producer but they weren't free. I offered her $13 for the bag and she said OK. When I got home I weighed the bag and it was only 28 pounds, not 35, and the bag said hybrid wheat on it, but I figured they were just recycling the bags so didn't care about that. My question, is the supplier Rainbow farms in Compton or Long Beach, and are the castings really free if one goes direct to them, or if you have to pay how much is a bag and what size is it? The castings were very light and looked sort of like termite or furniture beetle sawdust if you ever saw that. Does one have to worry about beetle eggs in the mealworm castings hatching and flooding your house and yard with beetles? http://www.greenpeople.org/listing/Rainbow-Farms-Fertilizer-40597.cfm

Yes, I grow and feed mealworms. It takes a while to get the colony where you want it to be. I keep two containers of beetles now. I found that one was not enough. I always scoop some of the small larva out to save for pupa to make more beetles. I think I have about 100 beetles or so per container. During the winter months they are slow growing, so I put reptiles heaters under a couple of the containers to speed things up. The Bluebirds, along with others, come every day for the mealworms and suet I leave out for them. During nesting season, they especially appreciate them.

What can I feed the mealworms?

I'm LOL, WonderWhiskers, at "turning up their little worm noses at Red Delicious." And to think I thought we were bad by being trained by the bluebirds to ONLY feed live mealworms. ... I'm new here. Just came to post a question about helping BB's get calcium. Now .. uh-oh ... I may never get to FaceBook to catch up with folks. I'll be reading here all I can. ... So ... Q: Oats? Wheat bran? Does it matter? (Oats sounds nice, since they can easily be sifted through it. Same with wheat bran, though?) We want to start feeding ours to keep them alive longer when needed, get them bigger if that is still as nutritious for the birds, and maybe raise our own, eventually. We want to feed the birds more than we can afford to. ;) 'Currently buying our mealworms locally at $15+tax per 1000 worms. While we can, I want to support local business. Our bluebirds raised one brood and have 5 more eggs laid now. [New male in training. 1st male disappeared. Neighborhood cat or ?? Who knows. I just know that Mama-Bluebird is busy training the new young male. He won't yet feed the fledglings, but is feeding the mom, and is dutifully taking a worm to the house - again, in training? :) Love, love these little birds.] BYW, this set of bluebirds is also willing to eat the dehydrated mealworms. !! Never before! Is it okay to feed more of them than the live ones, with plenty of clean water available, of course? Please see my post asking about calcium if you have time. Thanks. Lori

Thanks everyone. I must say I have been taking tons and tons of pictures when the babies come. I think there are three boys and a girl, but I am not sure. I love watching the six of them fly in. They are not staying in our yard for the most part they are back by the field behind our property but they come to eat regularly and I love love love to watch them. Kenn, I just got an order from Southern Insecataries yesterday, I must say even though they are pricey this year they do have really good worms and I love to order one day and have them the next. I am so hoping Sunshine has some available soon though that DHL shipping from Georgia is ridiculous! Oh and I checked that Duncraft site and it told me they offered free shipping on your first order only. Donna

Ok, I called and ordered some this morning, hopefully I will have them tomorrow. The price is a little more than posted but still reasonable. It was around $22 for 5000 or $40 for 10,000. They have medium sized mealworms. They only guarantee live delivery if you use overnight shipping which is between $20-$30 depending where you are located. I was going to see if they had waxworms too but totally forgot to ask, I have been getting some at Walmart though. I am hoping Sunshine will have more available like they said the first week in July.

Those are GREAT prices! I've been getting mine from my local WBU and they are $16 per thousand. I hope they don't run out.

Yikes! That still is a good price. I paid $83.00 for 4K. They arrived great but I fear I was WAY overcharged my first time ordering.

Just thought I would let you know I got the mealworms this morning and they are great. I didn't even see a dead one in there. They are medium sized but all seem that size not alot of little ones. Next day shipping was a bit pricey $35!! However it still came to just over $11 per 1000 with the shipping so it wasn't that bad, not great but hey gotta get them where you can! I have never done the next day shipping before, it was pretty nice to call yesterday and get them this morning! We were gone this morning but I left a note on the door for the DHL driver to leave them in the garage which was cool yet.

Glad you got your shipments. I called and ordered another 5000 last night and discovered the price had gone up. I checked around and it appears everyone has. The shipping is expensive but I lost one shipment in this heat last year so guess I'll just have to pay. I'm afraid I'll need to cut back on the amount I feed them every day. I was putting out 200-300 mealies a day but I will have to cut back to 100-150. It is just getting too expensive.
I have noticed one of the last brood is still coming to the feeder to get his share. Dad will usually try to keep him away from the meal worms as best he can so he and Mom can feed the latest brood up in the trees.
