Blues not around - nest in disarray.

Every morning we see our Blues as we get breakfast around 7.30. This morning they weren't here but we didn't worry - we'd seen them the night before, Papa at the feeder and Mama in the box. The eggs are at day 12 of incubation so we are/were expecting little ones any day.

After no sign of them an hour later (...so we think we know their schedule but they like to fool with us we know!)... we started to wonder, so decided to peek at the nest to make sure there wasn't a wasp in there or something (and I was secretly hoping maybe we'd see some 'cracking' already). As we approached we could see a couple of pieces of grass/needles through the entrance hole, which we'd not seen there before. Upon opening it we found this....

You can see the right side of the nest seems to have been tampered with - as though something was pulling the material up.

We could see the eggs were intact - though not in their usual neat arrangement.

At first it was hard to see the 4th egg - it was in the center almost under the others. As you can see material seems to have been pulled over the top of them.

We've never had problems with House Sparrows or Wrens but have read many posts here about them. We've never even seen a House Sparrow but Hubby thinks he may have seen a Wren twice this year.

Our Blues have not returned today and it's now midday. Is it normal for them to leave a nest once it's 'messed with' even if the eggs are ok??? We seen no signs of struggle with them, no feathers etc.... obviously whatever happened happened late yeserday or very early this morning. We're puzzled, worried, upset etc. etc.

We know many of you have been through bad times with your Blues and attacks from other birds. We hope that maybe you might be able to help shed some light here.

Thanks,

Bridget (and Hubby!)
