wren guard during nest building?

Hey guys, I know that usually you wait for an egg to be laid before putting on the wren guard. I've had one successful nest so far this year. Once the birds fledged and I had cleaned out the box, there were a few wren sticks in there. I opened the box for a week or so, and at this point I haven't heard a wren singing all this time. So now I closed the box and the bluebirds are back, starting a new nest. So the question is would it be okay to put the wren guard on while they are just building the nest, since I'm assuming it's the pair that already used this box successfully this year? Or now that the wren knows the box is there (even though I haven't seen or heard them in quite a while) will the wren guard be useless? Has anybody tried it with a second nesting? Opinions? thanks!
