How Embarrassing!

For my DH to tell me something I did not know about my Blues nest. This from the Man that rolls his eyes every time I talk about my birds! I had my nest cam on later than usual because the eggs are getting ready to hatch. I commented that she must think they are hatching soon because she was in the box after dark. He said "oh she sleeps in there every night" WHAT? I though they only stayed in there when it was too cold to leave the eggs! He looked at the screen and said "she's not sleeping yet, she will tuck her head under her wing when she is sleeping" LOL Me thinks he spent a lot more time watching this nest while I was gone than I thought! SO my question is , do they normally sleep in the box the whole time they are incubating? I feel so stupid! LOL!

I always thought during incubation Momma stayed on that nest as much as possible including all night long. That is funny that your dh notices things like that, especially since he rolls his eyes at you.

Not only is the rudeness a problem, I'm looking past that. Where did this little girl learn that it's okay for a mom to hit their child? Think about that long and hard. Letting your children play at this house means you're letting them hang out with a mom who thinks it's OKAY to punish children by hitting them. What if your child does something she doesn't like while in their home? Seriously--you're putting them at a very serious risk. At that age, my daughter, knew that mommies loved and protected their children, NEVER hit them. Do you truly want your daughter hanging out in a household where it's okay for a mommy to hit a daughter? You have to make your own decision--but I personally never put my daughter in a situation where she could see or possibly be subject to abuse. I don't condone physcial abuse, and wouldn't let her think I did in any way. Part of what we teach our children comes through our words--most of it comes through our actions and example. It we act as if we don't mind physical abuse, they learn it's okay, even if we don't commit it upon them ourselves. I, too, don't see how someone who has only one friend could possibly have been selected to be PTA president. And you had other families over to make cookies. Maybe you need to look around--there are plenty of people you associate with who would be better friends for you and your children. When our children are too young to make their own decisions, it's up to us to provide them with the best environment possible. Sometimes that means making tough choices, sometimes personal sacrifices, but they're young for such a short time--it's a small price to pay for giving them the best life foundation possible.

Grainlady-- Your chemistry lesson is great because my mind works that way. Understanding how a crust develops makes pie crust much more understandable to me. My mother always peached that overworking the dough makes it tough and now I understand why. The explanation of water vs. gluten is very helpful. Last year I was misdiagnosed with celiac disease and learned a bit about the behavior of gluten in foods while I was on a gluten free diet. Many thanks! I am going to try a butter crust and use my grater on the butter.

I was here in 2000,but i don't remember that story,must have been one of those days i skipped!! That was sooooooooooooooo funny,i was literally LMAO,didn't think i was going to get control of myself for a few minutes there.This is one ofthose stories that will probably come to mind when i'm falling asleep,and make me laugh all over again.I'm glad she wasn't hurt,and i'm sure she's smiling down on all of us now knowing that she made our day once again. Hope your nighty wasn't see thru.LOL I answer the door in my nitegown but mine are flannel.BUT nobody ever sees me without my teeth,even DH.I take them out only when i get in the shower,and as soon as i get out,putting them back in is the first thing i do.Even when i have surgery i make the dr's promise me that someone will put them back in as soon as the surgery is over,and so far they always have. My summer nitegowns are all cotton prints and not the ole lady type prints either.I sew so i make all mine and use pretty cottons and even put side pockets in them,so if i need to i can just slip on my bra and wear them as a dress. As for my hair,when my feet hit the floor in the morning,i put on my glasses,run the brush thru my hair ,then go in the bathroom and do everything else. Hope he brought you nice gifts,and didn't have his video camera going!! LOL,LOL Kathi

Hey Lisa, I just went to check my posts about my last nesting since i kept pretty good notes. I see that I noted that the mother was still staying in the nestbox overnight on day 14. Of course the weather was a little colder then, don't know if that makes a difference. On day 18 the mother didn't stay in the nest overnight. We were away for a few days so I'm not sure what day she actually stopped staying overnight. will hopefully note that this time. You should keep notes and we will compare at the end. And yes your husband is right the mother tucks her head under her wing when they are settled in for the night!

Lisa, I should have said that she stayed in the nest with the chicks overnight until they were at least 14 days old. It wasn't clear that I meant chicks and not just eggs on day 14.

I did see a DEE stay in the nest in the early spring when temps dipped into the 30s but we are in the 80s now with overnights over 60. You learn something new everyday!

This is my 3rd year for a nest cam, and yes, Mom always stays on the eggs overnight. Last year I had a very attentive male who also stayed in there with her. There was barely room for both of them, but he stayed with her all night. It was the first time I had seen that. It was their second nesting, but they had lost the first nesting eggs to cold weather. So I had to wonder if he thought she needed help. In fact, through the whole season, he acted like one of those husbands that has to tell the wife how to do everything! Always bringing grass, rearranging the nest, etc. Some days he was in there more than she was. Depending on the weather, I see mom stay with the babies until they are a week or ten days old and then stop staying inside at night.
