Me too! Finally an egg!!!

After a first unsuccessful nesting, Mama has laid her first egg. Spooker is up and now I have a question. Do sparrow spookers ever spook the bb's? Will she come back and finish her business? I am so jittery because of the first loss. Am trying to do everything right this time.

Congrats on the first egg. I have never had problems with a sparrow spooker and I even used them at a park last year. They might eye it up a bit first but it shouldn't stop them from going into the nestbox, especially since they already have an egg in there.

As far as I know, there have never been reports of bluebirds abandoning the nest if the spooker is installed AFTER the first egg is laid. Some take to it right away while others take longer. Eventually, both accept it and will even perch on it. Please keep in mind, if you have house WRENS (HOWR) the spooker will not deter them from sneaking in and destroying eggs. If you also have HOWR you will need a wren guard in addition to the spooker. Sialis.org has plenty of information on Sparrow Spookers and Wren Guards. Good luck!

I took Black Swallowtails for granted. They've been so common every year, I assumed they would always be plentiful, but they're somewhat rare in my garden this year. I have seven cats and one chrysalis right now and I had to look pretty hard to find them. Something must've happened to hurt their numbers. Maybe just the weird weather. Glad you're helping them along Weed.

Congrats, Mary, on your grandbaby and your eggs and cats! I love that name, too - surnames make good first names for boys/men, and Asher sounds like a surname. My grandson's name is Carter Brantley, with Carter being my father-in-law's name (his mother was a Carter) - if my daughter had had another boy, I was hoping she'd name it Sawyer after my Daddy - his mother was a Sawyer. I've linked a picture of my rearing box. I just brought home 4 GF cats from a local nursery that was almost out of plant leaves to feed them...I use a clear small file box with small $1 vases I bought at 'Wallyworld' to keep the cuttings alive for the cats. I've raised cats of all kinds for the last 5 years in a couple of these file boxes & I use plastic screening you can buy & cut between the lid & the top of the box to prevent escapees! I usually don't bring in eggs unless the wasps are every where! This was the first year I brought in eggs as well as very small cats because there were so many wasps! Hope this helps! It is very common to see those white marks on newly laid eggs; it occurs during the formation of the egg. Usually, it will go away as the female incubates, and moisture from her body will dissolve those white marks.
