I am so sorry to hear this. Being a 7th year bluebirder, I can tell the difference between "playing dead" and the real thing. Same thing happened to me two years ago. Parents poorly fed on a 70 degree day and then got hit with 50's, wind, and rain the very next day. All 5 perished even though mom continued to try and keep them warm. Good news is, though, that they layed a new clutch that year and went on to be successful! MY experience is if the failure wasn't caused by something like a sparrow, and they have an open box, they will try again so long as there's still time in the season. This does happen. You fed mealworms, so it's indeed odd that it didn't prevent it. I'm confident that your bluebirds will stick around and try again! ~Tim NE Ohio

Yes we do!!! 1 baby SCARED me. It was about to leave the nest and changed his mind. He couldn't get back in the box and not enough room to fly, so he fell to the ground. I went out there to pick him up and mom dive bombed and snapped at me like crazy. Just as I was about to pick it up it flew....so I was really relieved. I will check the box tomorrow to see if there is an egg left in there or I missed the 6th baby leaving. Karen

Ohsoblue I will be pleasantly surprised if we get another nesting, but it could be in one of the neighbors yards, as they have all put up boxes, but I do not think they monitor very well. If they do come to our yard, I hope they choose the other box, as we have a camera in it. Mine are still coming back for meal worms, but the worms are just about gone and I doubt I will order more, unless I see a nest being built. It has been fun.
