It looks like Indigo Spires to me.

It might be "Chiquita" as in banana.

I saw that too and thought it was really beautiful. Would love to find it.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. It looks a lot like Indigo spires but I don't think it is because the foliage is different than the plant I have which I 'think' is Indigo Spires, but it caused me to remember that plant and that it might do what I'm looking for and that is a blue salvia that is tall enough to peek over from inside the Youpon holly hedge I have in the front.

Shirley, I had a strong feeling I wasn't spelling Chiquita correctly ... lol. I think you nailed it. Does anybody on here grow it? Does it bloom early in the season? Or does it bloom late, like many other beautiful salvias that bloom only in fall?

Indigo Spires flowers are similar, but the leaves are narrower. I have Indigo Spires from Kathy and it's quite large, the Chiquita seems softer.

It looks like S Chiquita to me. Also the leaf of S. chiquita has a white fish fuzzy underside. Mine just came into bloom this week. Mine only blooms in the fall. I live west of Austin so Mine might have started later than yours. It seeds quite easily whereas S. indigo spires doesn't seed as voraciously. I pulled up a bunch of starts today. Wish I was going to the plant swap. Y'all could take home some .

I have gobs of this stuff. If you want seeds just ask, or plants, I am ripping some out and throwing them away

I have no idea which salvia it is. The Genus, Salvia a/k/a sage, is a large group of plants which are native to Mexico and South America. Some experts say that there are nearly 500 species and yet others believe that the count is between 800 to 900 species. Here is a website you can check out Robin's Salvias. Go ahead but they will tell you it is S. chiquita. Bog sage is more of a sky blue, not as long a bloom spire. Leaves are not as heart shaped.

Does anyone here have a suggestion on a tall blue or purple salvia that blooms early; tall enough to peek over from inside the three ft. Youpon holly hedge I have in the front?

It seem S. chiquita is a fall bloomer. I still want to grow it, but perhaps not in this paticular situation.

If not I may ask on the salvia forum, but you all here know Texas conditions better. It would get mid day sun.

Does anyone grow Indigo spires in the sun? How does it do? Does it stay upright? How tall does it get? The ones I have are in a shady spot where they tend to lean.

It does stay more upright in sun, I have some in partial shade and it is very floppy.

Just took this one for you, this is a South facing wall and rarely gets shade. It's even a little wilted right now.

I cut it way back in August and it is already grown in and blooming away.

The deer sometimes use this bed as a feeding trough and they never touch the Indigo Spires.
