Second nest

Came home from work yesterday and found MaMa Blue had been working hard all day there was a complete nest done, so it was about a week after the babies fledged that she rebuilt....I see the babies now sitting on the wire in the evening with MaMa and Dad so they are doing well.

Hi Maggie, How did the processing of your gander go? how are the ladies doing? Our little gosling hatched last Friday night, 3 days early and needed a bit of help near the end. It's doing great now, a real sweetheart! Here's some pictures. I'll be interested in hearing about your goslings and how you integrate them. I tried putting mine in with our ducks but the ducks attacked my little gos. Now it's my baby and will no doubt get spoiled rotten. I agree with you in that it is probably to soon for the original pair to start again. The box closest to my house fledged on 5/5 and on 5/12 I noticed some nest building activity in that box. It could be the original pair because they stay in the area and come back at least twice a day when I put out mealworms close to that box, so they still might defend it, although even that seems a little soon so I am not 100% sure. My female is sooo focused! First nesting fledged (6) on Thursday May 10th, I got the nestbox cleaned out asap because I know this female is very quick to start the second nesting (she is the same female we had the last two years). She started the second nest on Friday and laid the first egg this morning! I couldn't believe only four days inbetween fledging and laying another egg! Dad is still busy feeding the fledglings which are in our woods, haven't seen any of them yet, hopefully by this coming weekend I will get some glimpses of them and maybe tell how many made it. Two were non flyers so I am not sure about those two, especially with the mom focused on the second nesting and not on her fledglings. Donna

I am new to bluebirding and I stopped by to ask a question, which you answered with your lovely pictures. I was wondering if it would be ok to use a regular hinge on a nestbox. I had a hard time removing a wasp nest and re-soaping the ceiling so I replaced the original screw-hinge with a regular hinge. I see you have a regular hinge on yours, and it seems to be working out pretty well for you. Thanks for posting those wonderful pictures.
