Tree Swallows Staking out their Nesting Box..

They are back only about 4 day's now and wasting no time claiming house! About 10 houses get filled every year.

Really nice pic Konrad!
I have tree swallows that like my purple martin house that fell down to about 6' above ground! Very cool birds!
How far away from the birds were you when you took the pic?

Awwww..so sorry to hear of this. That storm came through my yard too, and took one of my Bradford Pears down. It landed across my driveway, and luckily did not hit the house or our basketball goal. Gosh, it came through really fast. If you are not seeing them back at the house at all, then they have abandoned the nest. You don't need to wait the 2 weeks to remove the nest. Give it a few days, and when you are sure that they have abandoned, go ahead and remove the nest. Maybe they will build there again. There is still plenty of time.~~Angie

Keeping Feeder(s) Filled wï¿½ Nesting Tree Swallows in the Yard?

The last couple years I had Bluebirds nesting in snags in the back yard (both snags have since fallen over). I cut way down on the food in the feeders, which I usually do anyway in the summer, because I didn't want to attract House Sparrows. Would put out a little BOSS, but only put out the home-made suet nuggets if the Bluebirds wanted some. This Spring, I had a pair of Baltimore Orioles nesting in a large Pin Oak right above the feeders. Did the same thing, cut down on the food in the feeders, because the Orioles were very territorial about the tree. They were especially aggressive towards Blue Jays, Grackles, and Crows so I stopped throwing any tidbits on the ground (like old corn chips, which the Jays and Crows like). So I would favor the security of the nesting birds. During the summer and fall, there are normally abundant natural sources of food, so feeders are not critical. Birds eat a lot of insects and feed their young insects, so they are unlikely to starve if you aren't feeding them.

Hi Sue, There is a "Tree Swallow Protocol" which describes how to set two or three bluebird boxes in such a way (distance and angles) so that a pair of each, BBs and TSs, will nest near one another, and protect one another from intruders of their same species. It's also used to get Tree Swallows, Blue Birdss, and Purple Martins to nest peacefully near (25-35 ft.) one another. You may have to muddle through the site, but it's worth the effort. I'm including a link. It really does work. In my case, I don't allow the TSs to nest in the PM rack. I will close off the gourd they want and move it about 30 feet away. If there are TSs nesting within 25-35 feet of the Purple Martin rack, they will not bother the martins, but they also won't allow any other TSs to come close. TSs win; PMs win; Carol's happy. My best guess would be that the tree swallows built a nest somewhere else and it was taken over. I've seen a bird lay an egg in an empty box once before. Tree Swallows are limited in their time to lay since they are neotropical migrants, and have to get back to South America. I wonder if you could put a fake nest under the egg so the babies have a better chance of survival?

That is so great! I love your nest boxes - they must seem very natural to the birds. Can you open them to clean them out?

I was taking a little break, meanly too busy with too many things.

and shoot camera Sony P43, about 4 megapixel, ....and was shot
by itself by means of motion sensor/controlboard, camera needed to be hacked,
3 wires soldered inside and hocked up to motion board, this can be programed
on how often pictures are taken. Camera and board is put inside a Pelican case/ sealed.
3 holes are drilled, one for flash, one for lens and
one for sensor, glass is glued over for the lens and flash hole.
Then all you need to do is put it up, in this case there was another tree
beside the box, strapped on.

>Can you open them to clean them out?The roof can be unscrewed, usually one screw and roof can be swung open.
There is a hole about the size of your little finger in center of the
bottom, there the dust can fall out, I usually go in with a wire.
