I have a new BB egg!!

OK I guess most of you remember my Phoenix 3 and his murder on Sunday.

Well the parents immediately started a new nest, I am pretty sure it is the same pair anyway.

These birds have obviously NEVER had Human contact, when I walk outside they fly away. I feed them EVERY morning for the last two weeks at 10:30, a good batch of meal worms.

They refuse to eat out of a feeder, so I first started tossing them on the ground, then began feeding them in a container on the ground.

I tried to hang it after that, and they wont touch it.

So they won, and they get them in my tupperware container on the ground LOL

Anyway, the male was on the hanger for the Humming bird feeder this morning, never has he been that close to my window!

HE sat there and looked at me like "are coming to feed us or what?"

So I got the worms and walked out the door, saying "good morning Blues" and put the mealies out. Of course he had already taken off when I opened the door, and I didnt see them again until about 10 minutes after I went inside.

then he came down and ate a BUNCH! He flew to the house and I assume, was feeding the female.

I had to leave and got back tonight after dark.

I KNOW I was not supposed to check the box after dark, but I HAD to see.

There it was - A NICE BLUE EGG!!!

So I flipped out. I had just received my Spooker YESTERDAY.

so I assembled it and went out and put it on.

IS that going to be a problem when they come in the morning and see that weird looking thing hangin on THEIR new house??

I am SO afraid they will just give up and leave, saying " Ok this 2 legger is nutso and we better get outta here!"

I know you all have said they wont mind it, but man it sure looks crazy to me!

HELP - please re-assure me I have done the right thing THIS time as I DO love my BB's and want to do everything right!

Most of all I want them to succeed in raising a brood this time, they have tried so HARD!

PS : I set up my repeating Sparrow Trap today too, nothing yet though :(

I would just watch today and see if you see them going into the house. I don't think I have ever heard of a Bluebird not accepting the sparrow spooker. They may not like it but if they have an egg in there they won't abandon it. If you don't see them going in there this morning, check the nest in the afternoon and see if she laid another egg. They lay their eggs one per day normally in the morning hours. I wouldn't be checking the box after dark anymore, once the female is done laying her eggs she will start incubating. If you scare the female off the nest after dark she probably won't be able to find her way back to the nest and the babies will die. Good luck to you and congrats on the egg!!

I have not seen them at all this morning, but they may have come earlier and I was not here.
There are TWO eggs though, and I would swear there was just one last night, but I may not have seen the other one.
I put mealies out, but so far nothing

I've been beaten to the punch,lol, but I'll name an experience. I had eggs that didn't hatch during the 12-14 day period. 2 days later still nothing, and I thought they were goners. Sure enough, I open that box to find new, healthy, hatched bluebirds! I'd give it a little time. The birds may eventually figure it out too. If they abandon or re-lay, I'd examine the old eggs to find out what was wrong with them. ~Tim~

Congrats on the bird life, Quietman! Here's hoping the HOWR's will be busy with their own nesting and leave the others alone long enough to get to fledging. The TRES will likely help with the defense. How fun to watch the killdeer! Have fun with your pond. My neighbor put one in last fall, and there were a lot of things they were not prepared for. They bought expensive coy fish, and herons ate them. Leaves fell in and fouled the water, the pump failed at least twice and the water froze, then the algae problem. Deer were walking in it, also fouled the water. They put a net over the whole pond, and some animal must have gotten caught in it and ripped it up. A groundhog dug a big hole underneath the berm and moved in; they fill it in, he digs it out again. A huge toad moved in. He's cute, but he keeps us awake at night, even with our windows closed. OH man what to do??? I wouldn't plug the hole cause that for sure would make them go to the bluebird box. Adding a wren guard now to the blues box would be a bit risky unless you could really watch closely after up put it up to make sure mom and dad accepted it. A really easy gaurd is using a shoebox, cut one side off and attach to the roof so the other side is covering the hole, this way it has sides too. You could try it anway as long as you could watch closely, I think that is what I would do. Chances are though with the boxes that close the wren may have already seen the hole in the blues box. I sure hope it doesn't go over there. Like I said those nestlings aren't safe until day 7. Donna

Lucky you! My BBs fledged last weekend and my TRES hatched Wednesday. I always catch the BBs fledging but have yet to see the TRES go....maybe this time!

Don't worry.I have used the sparrow spooker at least 20 times with my Blues and they never stayed away from the nest box.They come in quietly lay the egg and disappear and they don't hang around usually.Once the 4th egg is laid you see them around more.The spooker was the best idea.Feel re assured.You will have a successful brood.
