Ringed Kingfisher in NE MS

This afternoon I was startled to see a huge gray-blue bird flying across my back yard. He stopped for awhile in a tree and I was able to watch him through binoculars. Bigger than the common birds here, large head and beak and crest, rufous breast. The only kingfisher I could find in Audubon was all wrong... Belted Kingfisher. Googled and found Ringed Kingfisher, who is supposed to be in the Rio Grande area of Texas. When he flew away, another smaller bird came out of the leaves and flew right behind him. I did not see the second bird well enough to identify it.

There is a small drainage ditch behind my yard, seldom has any water in it. There are ponds fairly near, lakes and streams and the Tombigbee River Bottom is about 20 miles away.

What was this pretty fellow doing in town?
