fox sparrow?

Saw this pretty bird this morning. He was there about 10 days ago in the exact same spot apparently digging for insects and then disappeared till this morning.

Sure is! Mine only allow me to approach during the most severe weather, when they are foraging for spilled seed

Janis G, your bird garden sounds lovely. What kinds of plants do you grow in the garden and why do the birds like them? I already have several gardens and a couple bird baths in the front yard, with many flowers for butterflies and hummingbirds and other pollinators. Some make seeds the birds like to forage too (like Purple Coneflower and some of the annuals). I will be adding some native berry-producing shrubs to the yard. Also there are three feeders and a small bird bath in back and I would like to add more perennials and annuals the birds can use around the yard, especially near the feeding station (which is part-shade).

Nice bird to be the first one of the New Year! I've had Fox Sparrows visit the yard occasionally. Once a pair of Fox Sparrows hung around here for a couple weeks in the winter, which was the longest they ever stayed. But they seem to move on quickly in this area (eastern Mass.). I thought it was cute how they frantically scratch on the ground looking for stuff to eat. Even scratchier than the White throat sparrows.

BN, that was really great description/comparison between the two. Thanks much for your input. Think you, Jan, and beegood are right on about it being a song sparrow! -mxyplx, maybe a new prescription is in order??? ;-) This guy isn't a Junco, but don't you just love those little guys? Never used to have them (or at least see them) around this particular area until a few years ago. Now they are all over the place and I am very glad of it! Think the ones around here may be the Oregon Junco... CMK

They are all Swamp Sparrows. A hatch-year (HY) White-throated Sparrow, which you could see in its first fall/winter would have white wing bars and would also have the white throat, yellow lores, and black/white head stripes of an adult (After hatch year [AHY]), just paler than an adult. On this forum, it's easy; upload your photos to a free online photo sharing website, like Picasa Web Albums or Photobucket, then copy the html or embed link to the desired photo and paste it to the post. When you preview it, the photo should appear

Thanks, Rachel. This bird was a couple of yards from the feeders but wasn't interested in the seeds as much as he was in digging for insects. Coupled with redpolls and a red-bellied wp, these are all first-timers here in our yard and the migration is just beginning!
