Chicka, I don't know if they've flown yet, because each time I've checked lately, the camera is pointed at some blank place on the roof. The last few times I've seen the chicks, they were up on the tall ledge, though, so maybe the camera pointed at that blank area means they've taken off from that place! According to the link I posted above, they usually don't hunt on their own until about a month after their first flight. I thought I read somewhere that they stay at the nest sight (or with the parents) for up to a year after they hatch...but I'm not sure now. It's said that "the only time that a female would lay more than one clutch of eggs in a year is if the first eggs are lost or damaged before hatching or the chicks die in their first few days." Yep, three eggs now. The site said the third egg was first observed on the 30th so it would seem they don't lay their eggs all at once. I was wondering how long before we see chicks too, so I looked it up & it takes 5-6 weeks of incubation before the eggs hatch. If the first egg arrived around the 23rd of April (according to the Wood's Hole site), we should start looking around May 27th. The eggs will hatch in the order in which they were laid. Dad's helping out too. I think I saw him bring a peice of food back, but it was unidentifiable. I've also seen them switch off for sitting on the eggs. They had a peice of paper that they were using as a blanket for awhile. They would place it over the eggs while stretching their legs and then tuck it around their breast while sitting. It has at least one site for all of the New England states except MA, plus a bunch for NY. Lots of violence and sadness... the grackles and cowbirds and the Keene falcon ... mixed in with grace of butterflies and that magnificent display from the Tom. And,of course, I loved all the hummers. We haven't seen any for quite a while ... is it because our neighbors don't have flowers and so they moved on to better pickings? We still put out the feeders and are hopeful. Still, there have been some recent visitors. Most morning a Mama duck brings her brood to our feeders. We enjoy watching the babies mature and become more independent grazers. A few of the babies A chipmunk has made a home in our gardens. He/she travels through the grass, tail up, from the nest to feeders. Love this little guy! And a young deer has been grazing along the river's edge. Ears up, heading back into the woods.
