Mutant or do i get to name a new species?

I saw what I thought was a Rufus sided tohee out the corner of my eye while driving to work. I saw him fly across the street. A couple of weeks later I see him on the ground, not a tohee, no scratching, color not right,etc. Today a saw him again, i had a camera.

Mutant Robin?

This is leucism, which is uncommon.

Well folks, NOT ALL Gold Standard that are mottled are HVX diseased. Get to know the difference, as Ken and others have explained. And some one should explain the background history that the Dutch plant growers years ago found they had HVX infected soil but continued to send all their field grown Gold Standard around the world, due to the tremendous demand for it. Those diseased plants continue to find their way into our nurseries - it hurts to see them in nurseries everywhere I go, and more cultivars now than just Gold Standard. Early Gold Standard clumps in my mother's garden showed color changes which we concluded were just "unstable" Gold Standard: at an Indianapolis AHS Natinal Convention back in the 1980's there were probably 20-30 gorgeous Gold Standard clumps of all different colored and mottled leaves. Some of those plants probably came from Marge Soules, who would have received them from Mom. She and Marge discusssed the possibilities they wree diseased, but in fact the weaker ones always died out from poor genetics: HXV is plainly different. Note the recent American Hosta Journal article on the genetic mutations from Gold Standard (Moonlight, Richland Gold, Someting Different, Brenda's Beauty, Striptease, etc). Hope that helps. I agree with and recommend you throw away any Hosta with HVX - sterilize the soil area, not grow hosta in its spot for a couple of years. I'm not sure how I should do this but here I go: I would love any of these daylilies: Susan Weber, Spiny Sea Urchin, Geneva Firetruck,Chance Encounter, Wish Fulfillment,Fourty Second Street, Sea Urchin, Paper Butterfly. Anything frilled, ruffled or teethed, diamond or gold dusted..Any Spacecoast (Well I can dream can't I)? As far as what I can send...I'll wait until others sign up so I know what they want and can send whatever I have that matches up. If I'm not doing this right....flowersandbirds4ever please let me know. I couldn't figure out how you would be able to match up wants if we didn't list them here? Budsnblooms

Jeannie_kitchen has pretty much nailed it- Years ago, before really slick marketing hype & techniques were the norm, the naming of stones were more in line with the location of the quarry, and then the color or vice versa - eg: "giallo veneziano" - the "color" - giallo, meaning "yellow", and the "quarry" - veneziano - the name of the quarry in Brazil. Then, when the quarry discovered that what they were sending to the finishing plants did NOT match up anymore with what they had been shipping - say for the last three years, they quarry would "add" an "identifier" for the new found color, so as to set it apart from the original "first" color - eg: "giallo veneziano - FIORITO" - comes from roughly the same region in brazil, but has a totally different "look" - therefore the different name. There are also companies that "re-name" some or all common stone species in an effort to keep their customers from finding the same stone some where else- for less money. They are betting that most customers will give up trying to find "the" stone, since none of the other places that the customer has called has ever heard of "brand Juparana X-Y-Z".... This tactic works sometimes, but with really savvy customers, that have a digital camera, the internet (with places like Garden Web) and some perseverance, they'll find "the" stone that they are searching for - even if it has three or more "names"... hope that helps kevin

Wood species for doors or do I go fiberglass or steel?

I prefer fiberglass. Where is the home located? The upper end Therma stuff is pretty nice. I really like the Embarq and Signet series from Provia as well as the Waudena slabs in their fiberglass. I can't see a really good reason to go with steel or even wood unless you are an absolute purist on the look. The fiberglass is so good these days and can be stained to a near perfect match with the wood options.

LOL Elly I knew that's what you were saying. Tompy, this is where looking at all the landmarks help. Note the bill on the robin, towhees don't have yellow bills. BTW, my albino robin is back again this year working the fields behind our woodshed. I have a picture I took last year but I'd like to get a closer one. It almost has to be the same robin and suggests to me that when he returned, he knew where to go. Does anyone know if robins migrate back to their former territories?

Almost all species that were human marked have retuned to the same territory year after year.

There is a couple of starlings that nest in a hole under the roof of a neighbour each year. A robin that nest not far too. And, in the first days of May, a Hummingbird arrive at my door and searches his feeder and looks at me through the window. So I have to hurry to set his feeder for the summer.

partial leucistic robin. leucistic birds lack the ability to to produce dark pigment in their feathers. heres one that i found. a leucistic palm warbler.

We have a leucistic male house finch that has regularly visited our sunflower feeder for years. It was just out there last hour. It has most of its gray/brown back and tail feathers and some red on its chest, but in addition to some scattered patches its head is all white.

I have one in my back yard this year, a Robin. First spotted this month, March 2011, Southwest CT.

i have a pair of Lewis's woodpeckers that nest each spring just across the fence from my backyard in a patch of woods.
Last spring they fledged 4 young ones and all spring and summer before they left out they were daily visiters to my feeders. one of the bunch was splattered with white on back and side and tail. in late april the woodpeckers come back here and i sure hope the odd one comes back to visit too. somewhere in here on this forum i posted pictures of him or her last spring.
