Thanks for that ID help. I will label them and add them to my bird photo album. Love to have new additions to the album this early in the season. Also had a Snowy Owl this year.

Looks like what I've been seeing in the stores lately called Opuntia Emerald Wave. Who knows what that means;)?Maybe Opuntia cochenillifera. I've seen that on Opuntias, well I've seen it on some of mine, where the new growth looks dehydrated. Once the pad gets bigger it should plump up.Remember these guys can take the sun. The more sun the merrier for this plant;).

Is there some reason to believe that I have one, rather than the other? " It was properly identified by botanical name by Embothrium. Prior to that, just one of many common names was used for ID however that common name is often applied to both species. Prunus caroliniana is a native species that includes Texas as part of its natural range. It would be very unusual for Prunus laurocerasus to pop up spontaneously in your area but entirely natural for P. caroliniana to do so. It is also more tree-like in habit than Prunus laurocerasus, which is most often grown as a large shrub with no discernible trunk and the leaves present somewhat differently (smooth margins for one and slight serration for the other). As to the negative attributes you list, other than the propensity for P. laurocerasus being invasive in specific areas, they are just not serious enough to worry about.

There are definitely seedlings LOL. It's not going send a stolon 150' across the garden, especially a couple years after it was cut down! In fact I spotted a seedling yesterday and stopped myself from zapping it with glyphosate. I thought, 'heck, that gardenweb thread reminded me of how much I miss that plant'. I might leave it! The foliage does smell weird but only if you crush or rub it. It's not like Zanthoxylum simulans where on a hot day you can literally small the whole plant, and at some distance too. Toona 'Flamingo' is the same, but it seems more "smellable" on still humid nights. Like a strange mix beef and onion soup and burning rubber! 😱 FWIW pretty much all my camellias self seed now. Not to humble brag but I have high quality loamy soil so that probably helps these East Asian plants feel at home.

Crunchpa.......You are soooooo lucky to have seen a snowy owl!!
One summer I had a green heron that hung around in a sycamore tree. Wish it would come back.

Several years ago, I started to have phobes hang around. This year, they've built a nest on the side of our chimney. They are such well-behaved birds!

I loved seeing the Snowy Owls (5 of them). Probably never happen again. Glad I took the time to hike to the area that they were initially seen. They scattered after a couple weeks. They put a transponder on one of them to follow its whereabouts.I like seeing Herons, we don't have the green ones around. At least I have not seen any. I visited a local Eagle nest that has been very productive over the years. It seems they are having more eaglets. The pair were hanging around along with a immature one nearby. Looked to be a couple years old. A very big one. I was surprised because I thought they were more territorial than that.

The nest size is incredible. Its a great time to visit the area.You are going to see an eagle at least.The other half of the pair was lurking in a nearby tree. Not near enough for my point and shoot. They have posed for me before though, so I don't feel slighted.I don't think they feel disturbed and have become accustomed to visitors. I saw a nest on a lightpole right on the Interstate last week. A busy locale to say the least. I found it odd up here. I have seen the Osprey and Eagles do that in Florida. Our numbers must be healthy in Pennsylvania. I see many more than when I grew up. When you saw none.

Great pics Crunchpa!
I only saw a bald eagle once, and I was driving on the interstate with lots of traffic, so I couldn't look too long! Those nests are incredible! I wonder how long it takes them to build it?

What part of PA are you from? I lived in New Castle for awhile when I was little.
