Question about Peterson style nest box made by Stovall

Hello. This is my first post! I saw my first bluebird ever while I was working in the backyard and I got very excited. I purchased a peterson style nest box made by Stovall products. It is a very nice looking box. I am pretty handy with tools and I wanted to make a few so I can start a trail next year. My question is about the size of the box. I know petersons are very narrow but the inside of this box is narrower than any of the plans I have seen on line. Before I make a bunch of these

I was wondering if you knew anything about this specific box made by this company, or if you know anyone that has used this box with success?

Like other peterson boxes, the door of this box does fit in between the two sides and does fold down. The difference is this boxes inside demension in width ( which is the same width as the door) is 3 1/8". Other plans that are on line are wider by 3/4" up to a 1 1/2". Is this box in your opinion to narrow? The rest of the box is pretty close to other plans, just the width appears to be different. Maybe it is narrower because it is not made with any 2x4 stock? All stock that is used is 3/4" thick. Thank you very much for any help you can offer. I appreciate it.

I have built Petersons in the past,The common width is 3 3/8" to 3 1/2".I have seen plans with widths up to 4" I like to stay as close to the original as possible,The first one I made,I did use the 2x4 stock,everyone after that I made using 3/4"stock,I used 1x4 for the inner roof,floor,and back. 3 1/8" is kinda small,but I bet Blues would use it without a problem.If you click on the link below ,you will find plans that I use,except as I said I use 1x4 for the back,inner roof,and floor.I used 1x10 for the outer roof.I used 1x12 for the sides.I really like the Peterson's classic look,But if you want to build a very nice nest box,easy to make,and the Blues love them.I would recommend you try the Gilwood.

Hey Joe,

I have a bluebird trail with several different houses. I really like the looks of the Peterson, but have never used one just because of the small inside demensions. That doesn't mean I won't try one sometime in the future, but I have had good success without one so far. I do have one Gilwood house that I bought and it is probably my favorite house. The blues went to it as soon as I put it up. Most of my houses are the traditional NABS type houses and I have bluebirds nesting in everyone of them this year. But for some reason, the Gilwood house always gets occupied first.

nhsuzanne, I am in Central WI. I am attaching a link to some info on blowflies. I think the flies look just like a normal large fly but they lay their eggs in a birds nest and then the larva feed on the baby birds during the nighttime and go down into the nest during the day. They say around 10 larva per baby bird in the nest is ok and won't normally kill the birds but if you get more than that it can. Last year when I did my nest change there had been 3 blues babies and I found over 60 blowfly larva, it was disgusting but since it was a top opening box I never saw any of them until it was too late and we lost two of the babies. The one remaining one was fine after the nestchange and fledged on its own and I got to watch it turn into its adult colors. She was quite the character. This year of three blues nests that I cleaned out one had a few (maybe 5-10) blowfly larva in it, one had absoultely none and one was full of them all the babies fledged fine from all three boxes. These three boxes were all in about a 1/2 - 3/4 mile radius too. You just never know so now I am always leary about top opening boxes. I looked and looked every day in the top opening box by our house that had blues, I hated bothering them every day but I would have hated it worse if they died because I didn't look. I have some boxes in my yard close to the house (35+ feet away) and some much further away. I take a clipboard with a notebook and have a page for each box that I write notes in when I monitor the houses. It is good to keep notes, that way you can't forget something. As Bluebars said the Blues will build a new nest over an old one but it is much safer for them to have a clean box each time. I clean mine out the day after or the day of fledging. My other is a hoarder, my grandmother and aunt are worse. I'm okay, but only because my boyfriend helps alot. Because of growing up in that environment, I can't see messes, dirt or piles. I can really only notice differences. In order to maintain my own house, I try and keep it as sterile as possible. When I have been good for a while, I'll put a few things on the counter that looks nice. Looking nice is my entire motivation for keeping it clean. But if I have a towel on the floor, I can't tell the difference between one towel and six of them until I notice I ran out of towels or its brought to my attention. I notice one dish in the sink, but not all of the dishes in the sink. And I cant see dust until I put something down and it leaves a mark, because it accumulates so slowly. For me, it isn't about wanting to keep things, and I think that most of these people are similar. There are plenty of excuses to avoid drastic change, and some of them include sentimentality. If they give you a reason why they want it, and they give themselves a reason to keep it, than they feel less pressured and more justified in their pattern. Change is terrifying. It is unexpected and unsettling and very hard to emotionally handle, especially when your possessions give you a feeling of security. In order to maintain my home I have to avoid sentimentality as much as possible. So I believe that they leave the place looking sterile in order for the hoarder in question to notice when there is one thing out of place, because once that one thing becomes two things, they can't see anything out of place. It is an incredibly hard concept to follow, but it is a real thing none the less.

I love the furniture you've picked out. It will look bright and cheery and just the feeling of the inspiration pics you've posted in your other threads...once you paint! Paint the darn room already! :) My last house had muddy mauve and no natural light (houses on three sides and a big porch on the other). As soon as I painted, it changed everything. Even my mood was better. And if you have a front porch, I suggest you paint the porch ceiling blue. It made a big difference looking out my window and seeing Martha Stewart's Porch Ceiling Blue. Almost as good as being able to see the sky. :) Let your room evolve. Don't feel like it has to be "done" right away. Take your time finding art and accessories that you love. You're doing great and you're going to have a lovely space to enjoy.

Spitfire, pretty much my entire family is like that, very frugal Yankees. Furniture, rugs, lamps, etc. were/are only replaced when they get too ratty and worn-out to keep using, or broke and couldn't be repaired. Grandparents grew up in the Great Depression - both sets of grandparents married when the men came back from WWII, saved up and built modest houses around 1950. Pretty much everyone in the family just didn't have the money to be redecorating just because something was no longer considered "stylish". So a bedroom might still have 50-year-old wallpaper on the walls because it wasn't scraped or gouged or badly faded, so there wasn't any point in buying new paper. Although I do remember both grandmothers having very up-to-the-minute-for-1950 bathrooms, one had the robin's-egg blue fixtures complete with the metal-legged console sink and matching tile and the other had goldenrod yellow fixtures, but neither one would have dreamed of remodeling just to change the colors even though the style mavens considered them outright horrible thirty years later. I think a lot of it rubbed off on me, because I see little point (for me) in my decor having to constantly be "fresh" and "updated", it simply doesn't matter to me - I would just like to get things finished and be able to go on to other things to spend my money on. ;-) Practicality also trumps style in a big way in our house. We recently purchased a sectional (wow, brand new furniture, woowoo, but I'd been watching CL for quite a while to no avail) for the most effective use of space in our small, awkwardly-designed living room and I chuckled at the saleslady's comment that although of course you could still BUY them, sectionals were very "out", and we really should be getting a sofa-and-loveseat... even though that's what we were getting RID of because it wasted precious space! (DH and I bicker lovingly over the corner spot. Wonderful place to nest with lots of pillows and a warm blanket.) ljwrar, I would do any number of horrible things :-) for the kind of original features in your house, since my ca. 1900 house was almost completely stripped. Treasure them! If you replace the original light fixtures, wrap them well in acid-free paper, box them up carefully, and store them for a future owner to put back if they wish.

The Gilwood is the same width as the Peterson,One thing I really don't like with the Peterson is the slanted floor.The Peterson seems small,but as the nest is built higher,the depth increases.I really don't think it is any smaller then the Gilwood,once the nest has been built,There may even have more room.I like the Gilwood because it is easier to build.Like you said,I put one up a few weeks ago,the Blues were on it in less then 5 minutes,started building the following week,there were 4 other Nabs boxes to choose from.I guess the Blues like them too.

This is exactly why I like this forum. I learn something new every time I log on. It was just my perception that the Peterson was smaller. I may just have to buy or build one and test drive it.

I checked all of my other houses today (except the 3 across the road that I will get to tomorrow). So far 55 fledged and at this time 22 eggs or babies to go.

Thanks guys. Bigmatt, in the plans for the gilwood, is that a bar or pin in the entrance hole? Is that just used for a hinge to open the door?

Don't give up on the Peterson, several years ago I modified the Peterson and made my own design. I agree the box is to small but the design works great . Ask cathy md. I made one for her 3 years ago. I have fledged 50+ from my design, I have a camera in my box and the extra space in the box is very useful. I'll try posting pictures.

The bar is there to keep the hole the correct size,I make mine 1-3/8" from the bottom of the hole to the bottom of the bar.The space above the bar is for ventilation.In these plans the bar is also being used as a hinge,the door(front of the box) would then lift up from the bottom.I myself prefer the door to swing down from the top.I only had the bar on the door,not going through the side of the box as shown in the plans,I then made my hinge on the bottom.I just used a seperate piece of the bar for the pin lock.For the bar and pin,I used a piece of 1/8"brass welding rod,but am sure you could use any 1/8"rod you can find,maybe aluminum.I guess you could have the bar like in the plans and still have your hinge on the bottom,but you would have to fish the bar through all the holes every time you opened the box.

Thanks Joe,

Its a little more difficult to build because of the compound mitre for the roof...however if you are a wood worker not a problem. Its made of 3/4 redwood and the roof is 1/2" plywood with aluminum coil covering to make the wood last longer ...very effective.Notice in the picture that in midday the sides are protected from the sun and inside the box there are 3 holes ..2 covered with screen. I have a disc video about the box and plans if your interested.

Hello Phil,

Happy to send you a cd video. The camera I have is no longer available ...but at Sams Club they have a color camera with infra red light for about $45 . I have not looked at the cord length on theirs but I'm sure it would work. Mine uses 30' of original cord and 100" of S video extension. It goes to the TV no recorder hooked up although that is possible. If you have a box already its best to have about 9-12" for focal length of camera( floor to ceiling)by the time nest is built its down to 6-7".This gives you nice wide view of nest.
