Bird ID, but no pic!

I've had a new visitor twice this week and have never seen this bird. It might be in the oriole family, but I can't id it from my bird books. The back and wings are dark gray or black, orange/yellow breast with a white stripe over the eye.

With my binocs, I tried to look at all the markings, but it flew away pretty quickly. Once, it was perched on my fence and took a few seeds. A few days later, it hopped on my suet feeder and quickly took off. This isn't much to go on, but any help is appreciated. Thanks

Donna I don't remember where you are at but could it be an Evening Grosbeak?

Cathy, I'm in East Central MS...it's not the grosbeak. Checking again in my current Audubon book, the only bird that half way resembles it, is the yellow breasted chat..but I don't think that's it either. The bird I saw was much darker and more orange on the breast. The white stripe above the eye was longer. This is going to drive me crazy!

We have tons of Mourning Doves around us, and find them to be quite tame and tolerant. They tend to build nests about anywhere, in fact I have a large, flat terra cotta planter that is mounted on the brick right outside the back door. Every year we have Mourning Doves nesting there which amazes me since that door gets a lot of activity and the planter is only about 2 feet from the door itself, and it's at eye level! We all glance over at the mother and babies but never approach or feed them. Mom and babies seem perfectly calm around us. Enjoy your beautiful doves! Marilyn

Help w/ ID, pics of dead bird in fence. (kind of disturbing)

Doesn't look like an ovenbird as it doesn't have the central well-defined orangish head stripe. Not sure a Hermit Thrush as the tail is not distinctly rusty and different from the back feathers, though hard to tell in the photo for sure. By the size of the breast spots being round and quite defined, I am inclined to say Wood Thrush as well. BN

Ok...so I believe Google helped me ID this as a zebra finch. Looks like it's native to Australia! Must be someone's escaped pet? Wonder how he's doing today? He's a long way from home here in NE FL.

Oh yes I think that is way to far south for Evening Grosbeaks. That is all I could think of off the top of my head.
