Scott, good description of what is most likely a catbird... you should be able to hear him/her when you're in the area even if you don't see the bird. They are a "mimic" though far from the brown thrasher or mockingbird. You will be able to hear a MEEEEWWWW (a little bit raspy) from the thickets or underbrush. Look under his tail for the rufous/rusty patch.

Connie, funny you should mention looking at under his tail, because that is the exact view I had. I was sitting under the suet feeders when he showed up, perched about 10 feet above me. If he had decided to relieve himself at that moment, I could've told you what he had for lunch :-) I missed that rufous/rusty spot.

I had listen to the sound they make via web, and this one sounded more limited in range than the recorded calls usually associated with them. Learning the bird calls is still a huge learning curve for me.

I wish there was a website where you can select the sound of several types of birds, and have the sounds play randomly with multiple choice questions after hearing the sound. Kinda like taking a quiz without knowing the answers. For someone like me that would provide a better learning atmosphere. Every website I have visited have you select the bird before hearing the call. Great for identification, but poor for learning. Anyone have any suggestions on where one can go to be quizzed on bird calls with answers after the fact?
