Yellow Brandywine

I like Kelloggs Breakfast, Aunt Gerties Gold, and Earl of Edgecombe. If I remember, EoE, which is a bright orange baseball, has a pretty good shelf life. All three are very flavorful, no where near being bland. EOE is a short but wide/thick plant. The other two are big indeterminants.

There are very few varieties that stay yellow at maturity, most of them turn to gold, not orange, but Gold.

The only two varieties I know of off the top of my head that stay pure yellow at maturity are Lillian's Yellow Heirloom and Hughs, and maybe Basinga depending on where grown.

But if you're asking in a larger context about the majority of yellows that do turn gold, then below are a few of my faves:

Dr. Wyche's Yellow, which isn't low acid
Galina's Yellow, PL cherry
Manyel
Dixie Golden Giant

This is my first time posting on this forum. I'm growing Lemon Boy and am harvesting now.(way ahead of the Early Girls) I've only one plant but it's thriving and producing lots of fruit. They look beautiful and taste delicious. I'll be growing this one again next season.

I quite liked snow white cherry (which is yellow when ripe) and blondkopfchen (which is more gold). I thought yellow pear was awful.

Verna's Orange Oxheart- very meaty, few seeds, nice flavor
Herman's Yellow heart- also meaty with few seeds, nice flavor

Earl of Edgecomb and Kellogg's Breakfast were nice but don't compare with VOO for texture, yield and earliness for me.

I used to like Taxi, and one year had an extreme bumper crop of Lemon Yellow, Wonderlight or whatever it is called, but just grow VOO and HY now.

Gold/schoolbus yellow/orange: Aunt Gertie's Gold, Spark's Yellow, Herman's Yellow, Dr. Wyche's Yellow, Elbe, Schellenberg's Favorite, Earl of Edgecombe, Kellogg's Breakfast, Roughwood Golden Plum (paste)

Plus the yellow-based bi-colors: Burracker's Favorite, King Pineapple, Virginia Sweets, Peaches & Cream, Big Rainbow, etc.

Love, love, love Dr. Wyche Yellow. I get mostly 1 pounders first flush and then 10-12 ounce from then on. I like the fact that it has few seeds and lots of meat. I can pick when pale yellow with green shoulders and it will hold for 7-8 days on the kitchen counter. Love this tomato.

Enjoying Huang Se Chieh this year. (yellow that stays yellow!) Nice little tomato. Big productive plants.

But, but, but,... yellow (& white) tomatos don't taste very good, and, and, Lucky Cross is a bicolor, so there... Spammy sticks tongue out at Mulio. LOL

I usually qualify yellow with "most" and often mention Yellow Brandywines.

spammy i disagree...have had some dr. wyches that would compete with most others for taste and texture...but also found them very inconsistent (they are a bust this year). KB last year was crap for me. KBX this year looks great, prodcing heavily, taste and texture like a pumpkin. Wapsipinicon peach very good but delicate and was always susceptible to BER in my garden. Homer Fike's yellow oxheart produced nicely last year, had one 42-ounce tomato, but like other oxes that I have tried it tended to never fully ripen before rotting, and often I could only eat the bottom third (which was usually good). Did not like Aunt Gerties Gold or yellow brandywine. Going to give KBX and Dr. Wyches another try next year.

I have Golden Jubilees and was wondering if anyone can tell me if they are very good? As of yet mine haven't produced (they were fighting with the Brandywines for sun - Brandywines won).....

This year I grew Yellow Brandywine and Burpee Sweet Tangerine. For taste, the Brandywines are definitely superior, but each of the little, determinate Sweet Tangerine plants has produced about 20 beautiful tomatoes with decent, citrusy, mild flavor. 10-14 oz each I would say. Sweet Tangerine just earned a permanent spot in my garden.

This year the I have Old German which hasn't set a single fruit yet so I can't speak to taste but probalby won't grow again.

Roman Candle - truly yellow when ripe. It's gone in some sauces - nothing spectacular. Looks like a long Christmas light.

Last year my fav in the garden was a hybrid called sunburst. Couldn't find seeds for it and the garden center I got it at didn't have them - not sure what nursery supplied it. Last year wasn't very succesfull - first year and the other toms all did very poorly, but this one did great and tasted great.

rocky_acres - I grew golden jubilee's this year, and I thought they were absolutely great. However, I'm a newbie, and grew almost all hybrids this year, so I don't know how they'd compare to a heirloom yellow/gold.

If anyone knows, that'd be great to hear. I'm hoping that between nurseries and craigslist, I'll be able to find some nice heirlooms to try out, since I don't have the space or the south light to grow from seed in my current place.

This isn't the first year I have ever done tomatoes but this IS the first time I have paid close attention to WHAT I was planting as opposed to just grabbing what was available and would turn red (or in this case, yellow) in the summer....lol!

I don't know your clime, but I totally LOVED my Brandywines. It's almost going to be like losing a family member when they go this winter....hahaha!

Well, I found one book that says Golden Jubilee is a heirloom, but everywhere else I've seen calls it a hybrid. I know I got mine at Meijer (a big box store), and none of the other tomatoes they carried were heirlooms.

Of course, now that I look on the web, lots of places call it a heirloom. The ones I have look like the heirloom pictures, so I don't know. They are large, beefsteak type with a flat bottom.

Azoychka is putting on a good show for me this year. Nice production in a less than ideal year. I like the flavor too. It has its own distinct taste, a little citrus-y; a little spicy. Last I grew Lemon Boys (hybrid) & Earl of Edgecomb and like both of those too.
