Earth Hour, game cam photos

Last Saturday night was Earth Hour, when people across the world turned off lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. to vote to stop Global Warming, before December's Copenhagen Global Climate Change Conference.

At 7:45 p.m. we turned off the lights and hiked up to the top of the mountain to watch the Woodcock displays, but they have already stopped..at least three weeks early. So we sat in the grass watching the sunset fade while the constellations appeared, listening to the persistent hoots of a Long-eared Owl and screech of a Barn Owl.

This Saturday I sat around the woods watching a Pileated Woodpecker couple dash from tree to tree. I took photos of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a Brown Creeper,

but they didn't turn out well as the tiny, fast moving birds were high in the canopy.

Haven't had a photo of the male bobcat for over a month-it's wise to the camera now and avoids the flash. His front foot tracks are 2 3/4" wide, 2 1/2" long..big sucker!

PAM, it sounds as though it is time to give your Diary Secretary the elbow. Wait until you reach my age and have to write everything down and will beable to remember what you received for Christmas 1955 better than what you just had for lunch! Sheri I hope the cargo plane has at last trundled over the Atlantic with your mountain of secondhand books. It must be so handy having that air-strip behind your backyard. We only live about ten miles from the border and, as you know, the Celts like to spend their spare time, especially when fuelled by 27 pints of Brains beer, making music and singing. Does anyone else watch Wild Earth Safari Live?

We've watched Safari Live for years. We have gotten tired of their obsession with cats, kills and close-ups of cats eating their kill. We still glance at it occasionally. We've started putting Pete's Pond up. It is also operated by Wild Earth. It's a live cam on 24 hours manned by "zoomies" from their home computers. In the past 2 weeks we've seen: eland, giraffe, black-backed jackal, elephants, warthogs, impala, zebra, baboons, hyena, waterbuck, monitor lizard, guinea fowl, Egyptian geese, ostrich, hare, steenbok, African wildcat, crocodile, vervet, kori buzzard, civet, tortoise, dwarf mongoose, stork, African bullfrog (huge). We also saw lions.....and a kill. The best sighting was 5 cheetahs....all together...which is highly unusual.

I can't believe I'm the first to comment on how HILARIOUS nicholsworth's photo is. ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS! Man, that little girl can work. What she lacks in precision she makes up for in enthusiasm. Beware, all plants! Just too funny. A perfectly timed photo! On topic, pretty good genes here so far, but not nearly as good as NHBabs (good grief, you may not go for another century!). My eyes absolutely stink. I need new eyes. On the topic of Things You Can Do When You're Nearly 100, one thing I love about this area is that my kids are learning the two main Maine summer activities--tennis and sailing. I see 90-year-olds regularly doing both all summer, and I love that they're learning a sport they can do for their whole lives.

Thanks-the problem is that the Cuddeback cam, which takes clear, coloful photos, frightens the critters with the flash, and they learn to avoid it.

But this new infrared one is TERRIBLE. May have to return it. First, it's too slow to photograph anything that doesn't just sit in front of it. Most of the photos are empty because the critter that triggered the sensor is long gone.

Then, when something does hang around in front of the cam, the photos are so grainy and horrible, the animals are almost unrecognizable

I love your trail cam pics Rachel! Could you try different places with the trail cam so the animals don't get used to it and/or the flash?

Unfortunately the critters have learned what the Cuddeback cam means and avoid it no matter where I move it. I set it up on the bank of the pond to get only daytime Wood Duck photos, but still nothing. I thought perhaps the sensor has too short a short trigger range so today I fastened it to a shrub on the bank, in front of Wood Duck tracks.

This morning when I removed the SD card from the new HCO ScoutGuard SG550 5MP Infrared Hunting Game & Scouting Trail Camera, although there were wild turkey droppings on the ground in front of it there were still were no photos. I packed it up to return and it's sitting on the porch to be picked up.

Who would have thunk it that animals can figure stuff out and so fast. I've really enjoyed your photos Rachel if that makes it any easier. :)
