Egg ID Help Please ASAP

Hi All,

I am in a major state of panic right now. I had a chickadee take up residence at one BB house recently. I have been watching and not noticing the Dee's at said house. This past weekend, I had two HOSP in my barn and there was lots of insallation from my tack room on the floor. I have been watching carefully but never saw them at the BB house. This week I have noticed Dees in the other BB house so wondered what might be going on in the house I originally saw them in before the HOSP's . Anyway, tonight I opened the box and saw these tiny brown speckled eggs. I immediately went to Sialis.org but cant tell from the pix if these are Dees or Hosp. They are distinctly little brown speckled eggs. I have seen no Dee action for a week in this box. Any ideas. If they are HOSP eggs I want to dispose of quickly. BTW, I did not see HOSPs in the barn this morning.

The house sparrow eggs I have seen are pale bluish green speckled with brown. Not sure if there are variations

And the Dee eggs I have seen were speckled with an almost maroony-brown color. I think it would be easier to know by what type of nest was built. If the box is stuffed full of grass, plants, trash, etc. and has a dome over it, then it's a HOSP nest. But if it's got moss, lined with soft fibers, then it's a Dee nest.

trees from Wal-Mart ==>> what can i say .. lol .. treat them like poinsettia ... in the sense that they are mass produced for the holiday.. and meant to be throw away by the end of winter.. BTW.. bboy is correct .. as usual .. lol like a poinsettia ... there are many of us.. who can torture them forever.. trying to make them into what they really arent ... which we want them to be a long lived house plant ... but that is your choice ... regardless.. they are conifers which belong OUTSIDE .. but for the holiday season ... whether or not they are proper for your z9 is beyond me.. bboy???? most likely .... that pot is so choked with roots.. that sooner or later.. it will fail ... an at that point .. or just prior.. you either free it to mother earth.. where it belongs.. or you throw it away ... basically.. its a disposable plant ... now.. all that said.. the reason it is cheap and disposable .. is that it roots freely ... and can be massed produced with a small investment.. perhaps you could try rooting some pieces ... if you could find some brown wood that would actually root.. before it rotted ... boy has that thing been hyper-fertilized ... anyway.. enjoy it.. but dont let it break your heart .. if and when it starts going downhill ... ken

That looks just like the one i have!! He must be a gst!! I had a GST egg hatch last week and the hatchling was a lot darker and smaller, i couldn't even see him really without a microscope, this one i can see a little better. The other hatchling died, he never ate his egg casing, only a little and then he never started eating leaves, i wonder if he hatched too soon, and that is why he looked different, idk, these things continue to amaze me, and worry me, lol.

Hi. I posted the same message with a photo on a different forum. I couldn't post a photo with this message because I didn't have the resizing software at the time. I suspect that they are butterfly eggs. I found one in my grapefruit mint yesterday. Didn't have my camera with me, or else I would have taken a photo it. Quick help, please! How many large eggs make 4 extra large eggs?

An extra large egg has about 4T of content and a large egg has about 3 1/2 so if you use 5 large eggs you'll be over by 1 1/2 T. You could stir up the eggs in a measuring cup and then dip out the excess if you want to be exact. Or you can just use the 5. With the cake mix I doubt it makes that much difference. Go with whatever is most comfortable. You can use a yellow cake. It will be less lemon-y. Or you could use the optional lemon extract for the lemon boost. Carol

Yhe bottom of this nest is lovely moss. I know that part is a Dee's nest. The eggs I think are Dees but there are no Dees going in and out. The top of the nest is covered with insulation and other junk. I think the eggs are no good and the HOSPs built a nest over the Dees.

Now, what is the best course of action? Take the eggs and nest out of the box? I have not seen the HOSPs yesterday or today.

If you do not know for sure if the Dees are going in and out you should leave the nest alone. They can be very sneaky and you are just not seeing them. Maybe could you post a pic of this nest. It is actually illegal to disturb the nest of a native bird. If the Dees are still around you could put up a wren guard after the first egg is laid to keep wrens and hosps out. If you have boxes up you should be eliminating the hosps or they will cause you greif down the line.

If you haven't seen the HOSP, maybe they found another nesting spot. I would take the junk out so as not to freak out the Dees, and see if they come back. Like bbcathy said, the Dees can be quite sneaky, and often times you won't see them much. Watch out for the HOSP, and give the nest time to see if the Dee eggs hatch.
