Yeah when the plants go they go fast. I just lost a majority of my plants 2 days ago, but as you said I got tons of zucchini so I never care. I already have a couple summer squash plants growing that will start producing soon and when I pull out the current plants I will just plant more seeds. Vining plants that aren't grown on a trellis are typically very resistant to the affects of the SVB because of all the secondary roots they have along the vine.

Hi Connie. Nope, not close to the cabin. They have tried to reintroduce moose to the Keweenaw, but so far they haven't stayed and have wandered (or swam) back to the 'other' part of the UP. These moose were near Iron Mountain, MI, which is probably only 50-60 miles 'as the crow flies' from our cabin, but a good 120 miles when you are earthbound. I sure won't get close. I remember once, in Yellowstone park, seeing a moose cow and calf in a swampy area. People were stopped taking pictures and we stopped too. One set of parents was urging this little girl (with a camera) to get closer to take a picture. She couldn't have been more then 8 or so. That has always stuck with me. Those people were nuts and very lucky they didn't get that little girl trampled or killed! All mama moose would have had to do was decide that someone was a threat to that baby calf! These pics were all taken with my biggest telephoto!

So glad you solved your mystery! On another note: for many seasons I've had a bird feeder station with tons of house finches/goldfinches/house sparrows/etc. just a few feet away from my veggie beds planted with peas, without any noticeable losses. It sounds as though the birds in your area are hungry for protein, as nesting season's underway. Now they've learned to eat a handy alternative when insect populations are low: your poor peas! It sounds counter-intuitive, but offering them a feeder filled with oily black sunflower seeds might keep losses to a minimum. In my experience, they'd much rather have enticing, easy-to-get fatty seeds than the so-so peas. Other people's mileage may vary, of course. Since pea-prospecting is a learned behavior, bird netting is currently your best bet until the next few generations "forget" this food source. Best wishes for your garden, L
