I Sense Something Is Wrong!

Sorry for two quick posts, but I fear something has happened and have no idea what that could be! The babies were poking their heads out pretty far and fledging was near. I was in the house for no more than 30 minutes, then I resumed watching and saw no babies at the entrance hole, or Mom and Dad coming to the box. This has been going on and I don't know how I could have missed them leave...I'm still watching and Mama and Daddy Blue are perching and flying from one tree to another, and NO fledglings in tow! I saw Mama only once fly down to the yard, grab a bug and fly off, but other than that, NOTHING!!

I'm afraid to open the box for fear one or two might have remained, but I feel certain that's not the case.

I am worried sick that something has happened. Am I overreacting? Do you have any explanation as to what is going on? Many thanks.

Hi Donna, when my babies fledge, I never see them soon after, and sometimes not for weeks after. I think you missed them. Wouldn't if be funny if they were watching YOU and waiting for you to go inside so they could safely fledge? . If you walk near it quietly (behind if possible) are the parents swooping you? That's a pretty good indicator that there are still babies in the box. Just trying to think what I would do. I guess I would wait until tomorrow and then go check out the nestbox

Donna many times they look like they are ready to go then they all decide to take a nap. I have been SURE they were getting ready and they didnt leave till the next day.
You can go listen to the box for peeping or fluttering. I don't think they could all be way up in the trees in 1/2 hour......but you never know. I don't think mine have ever gotten all the babies out and way up in less than 2 hours. I bet there are still some there.

I see the dreaded root rot has occurred at your house. I agree that you may be able to save this plant. When this happens to me, I first remove all the dead and mushy roots, and closely examine the stem. Remove any stem that is brown and mushy, and just keep working your way up the stem until you have green stem. I then place the crown into some nice warm water to re-hydrate it, along with any of the leaves you picked off. I find it helps to take off leaves until you have maybe three rows, so the crown can focus more energy on growing new roots. Scrape any leaf callousses off the stem, place into 1-1-1 mix, and bag it. Bagging, or any method you choose, helps keep the humidity high and the crown hydrated. Keep under bright light but out of direct sun. In a couple of weeks it should have re-rooted. Barbara

Had to stake my bush beans....have I done something wrong?

Krista, I doubt you did anything wrong and think it likely that it is just the wind causing the issues. The wind here just isn't kind to anything these days....(sigh).....or most days. I usually don't stake bush beans, though at some times in the past I did so to keep them up off the ground. My ultimate solution was to plant more of them and plant them more closely together so they all hold each other up. That's one way to deal with it. They'll still produce fine even if lying flat on the ground, but when they fall over and lie on the ground, pests can climb onto the plants more easily. Bean plants that are lying on the ground also are more prone to foliar diseases. You can help prevent that by mulching the ground around them so that when it rains, the raindrops don't splash disease microorganisms up from the soil onto the plants. Now, as time goes on if you get all leaf and no flowers or beans that could be a sign of too much nitrogen in the soil, but if that is an issue, only time will tell. Sometimes the plants just make such good growth after rainfall or irrigation that they get topheavy and fall over. As the season goes on and the main stems get stronger, they usually won't fall over as much. I try to plant the bush beans in an area where they get some wind protection, but depending on how open your garden is to wind, that's not always a possibility if you're on flat, exposed land with nothing around to serve as a wind break. Shutterbug, I can't tell you in words how much I identify with what you have written. I'm a 31 year old male and my father passed when I was 25. I wish I could tell you that it gets easier but it doesn't it...but it's up to you how you internalize that. Whenever I start to cry (right now) as a result of the horrible images associated with my father's death, I do my best to remember that he is/was/always will be worth the tears. You get one father in this life and that crap will always f' you up if you were close but it's one of those things...is it better to have never loved or to have loved and lost? No right answer here - just telling you what works for me. What does not jive is cheaping your experience by taking an antidepressant. I started taking Paxil when my father was at a hopeless state of treatment (24yrs old) and still can't get off those sob's. Sure they help my mood but getting off them is like trying to quit heroine (not that I've ever tried). In short, I wish you all the best in your recovery. Bri, if I am understanding you correctly, I wouldn't worry about the bit of slant you are getting with the cluster stitches. They do sort of lean to the left. It might help if the loop you pull through the last bunch of loops to make the cluster come together is a little loose - make it a teensy bit larger than you usually do. When you come back on the next row it will be easier to make your stitch into it. If this is not what your problem is, can you be more specific?

Just got back from the store and checked the box which is totally empty...they must have fledged without me, but all five babies had to have left the box within 30 minutes which I didn't think was possible...I mean, BAM and they were gone.

I see Mama and Daddy blue in the trees, but I hear no "baby sounds" of them being fed which is pretty distinctive. I just hope they are safe and that the parents are protecting them. Of course, I'd feel better if I could get just a glimpse of the fledglings!!!

I'll clean out the box tomorrow which is very nasty! Gee, these last two weeks have worn me out and I would think the parents are pretty tired as well. She began her second nest last year 13 days after the first brood fledged, so we'll see if she's up to round #2!

Donna I have watched five fledge and they were out of that box very quickly, I would say within 15 minutes they were gone and out of sight so yes you just missed them, and they are surely safe with their parents.

Donna, I think Anita is right...they waited for u to go in so they could fledge LOL. I have seen baby blues fly out of the box one right after the other cuz they push each other out. I don't think they meant to go so quick, they just wanted to look out the hole and pushed each other out.
