Chicka, I don't know if they've flown yet, because each time I've checked lately, the camera is pointed at some blank place on the roof. The last few times I've seen the chicks, they were up on the tall ledge, though, so maybe the camera pointed at that blank area means they've taken off from that place! According to the link I posted above, they usually don't hunt on their own until about a month after their first flight. I thought I read somewhere that they stay at the nest sight (or with the parents) for up to a year after they hatch...but I'm not sure now. It's said that "the only time that a female would lay more than one clutch of eggs in a year is if the first eggs are lost or damaged before hatching or the chicks die in their first few days." We check on her every day... and today, Larry told me that she holds her wings out a bit because she feels movement within her eggs! So, hatching should take place very soon! It looks like she's done a little more nest improving, too... today, there appears to be more soft grasses than there was a day ago... so, I think her mate is bringing more materials to her. At least, that's how is appears. It's fascinating, Kristi! I'm so glad you posted this! Larry and I both check on her from time to time... at least once or twice a day!

Glad you like it - I started on that site watching the barn owls (molly & magee) someone mentioned the Ga. bluebirds and I *immediately* went to check it out. They have been so funny this afternoon - each time the wind rocks the box - every little mouth opens wide expectantly!!

The female heron was attacked by a Great Horned Owl twice, early in the morning on April 8 and 9, while she was incubating the eggs. She wasn't noticeably harmed and the eggs are OK.
