I prefer the hummzinger

I sure do Javert. From mid-July to the end of September, I am inundated with scads and scads of RTHBs. It is a glorious time of year. I am always so thrilled to see them back and so sad when they leave. My primary objectives are to offer plenty of nectar and freshness is really key. So, a Hummingbird feeder with lots of ports that is super easy to keep really clean is key for me. The best one I have found hands down is the inexpensive feeders by First Nature which I buy at Walmart. my feeders have to do double duty as the first birds of summer i get are the grosbeaks and orioles and tanagers that are starving for necter after a long migration from way down south. since they are all perching birds i have to have feeders with perchs and hold a lot of necter. i also use the first nature feeders from walmart and even converted one with a gallon 63 canning jar instead of the quart plastic from walmart. i also have both the red and orange hummzinger feeders and they are good feeders and easy to clean and fill but the tops are domed slick plastic and some of my birds avoid them because they have slipped and slid landing on the slick surface. the hummingbirds show up later than the song birds and share all the feeders with the song birds. they don't perch as much as the song birds but some do like the perches too.

WOW! Nice video dklucius. At my feeders I get a dominant male hummer that keeps all other hummers away except his mate. I put a feeder up in front of the house and also in back, but he keeps an eye out for both.

You must be down south because our hummers leave here around Sept. 1.

i'm in the southwest corner of Colorado. the grosbeaks started coming last week and one tanager today and the orioles most anytime. the hummingbirds show up later part of april or first part of may. the nest close by and most all bring their young to the feeders in late may to early june and the hang around till late august or earlt sept.
and all are gone for the winter by mid sept. the males do boss the others around but all the different birds come and go all day long

wow, Bandjzmom... that video is fantastic. Even without sound I could almost hear those hummers!

My problem with those WalMart feeders is I find they often leak around the place where the top & base meet... do ever have that problem?

i did get one of the walmart ones that seeped when the wind blew and the feeder swayed too much. I seperated the top and bottom and coated the seam with pvc cement and put it back together and let it dry over night. when i want to clean it i just sink it in a bucket of water with a couple drops of bleach and soak the base and the bottle for awhile and then rinse it out in the yard with a hose and fill it again.

I might only get 3 or 4 birds on the feeder up here.
I have a question, why do the feeders swing? Perhaps for easy mounting and removal for refill?
I find when they swing, syrup level rises and sometimes spills a bit, honey bees get more attracted to it this way....even with bee guard.
I'm thinking to just put the feeder on something solid this year.
Hummingbirds can reach down very deep to get syrup, my oriole feeder was like this when it didn't swing, worked fine for hummers too, it's broken and need a new one.

Do you know of a hummer feeder with low syrup level?

That's one reason I like the hummzinger. It swings in the wind but all the nectar is below the ports. I can see why if you get a lot of hummers you would want one with more capacity but I don't have that problem.

Thanks konrad. I shot the video with my little point and shoot just to get something recorded for my family to see. The quality isn't the best, but you do get the general idea regarding the numbers of birds. I never have any issues at all with these feeders leaking, and we do get quite a bit of wind in my yard. I am sort of up on a ridge, and it can get quite windy here. I suppose that the Hummzinger would be good in the case of high winds. It is a great feeder too.~~Angie

Wow, great video bandjzmom. You sure get a lot of activity in your area. I'm way north of you, and the biggest problem I have with that type of feeder is the hornets. While I like those feeders and the hummingbirds like them, the hornets do too. So I tend to stick with the hummzinger, saucer-type feeders. There's no dripping, so less sugar to attract unwanted "guests".
