I never had luck with the store bought Oriole nectar style feeders..I got more bees than anything. I just pop out oranges halves. The Catbirds in my area like the oranges as well so I get some good shows. Other people have used a shallow dish of grape jelly (not jam...jelly) and they have luck with that..but these guys here can't care less..although I have found a Nuthatch or 2 wallowing in it..lol..but yeah..more ants than it was worth to me.

As far as placement..you could put it on the trumpet vine providing the limbs are sturdy enough, but you may end up with bee soup..I found that bees can get through the bees guards on the Oriole feeders..either that or I have like CIA bees here.

The feeder you mention is mine. The vine is Vigna Caracalla. The feeder is not on the vine but close enough that the vine grew around the chain holding the feeder. The only Orioles I get are the Bullock's Oriole and Hooded Oriole which may differ from the ones in your area. I've had orange halves and grape jelly within two feet of the feeder and the Orioles ignore them. There are bees crawling around of the feeder sometimes but I have never had one get in the feeder. But I never have bees get into my HumZinger feeders either and I guess some people do. The vine attracts lots of ants so I did have to devise an ant guard to keep them out of the feeder.
I live on a small city lot with houses very close on both sides and in the back. I think the Orioles feel safer when the vine gets tall enough to shield the feeder. I've seen a male Bullock's on it a few times this spring but always at twilight. When the vine grows up I see them several times a day.

I don't have any luck getting them to come to a feeder either, despite the fact that they nest in my neighbors yard every year and I see them frequently. They do love the blooms on the buckeye trees though. I've also had juveniles eat sunflower chips in the fall.

I keep trying though!

Here in WI we attract them with the oranges and once we see them coming we put out grape jelly too. They like the oranges but they LOVE the jelly. Our catbirds and house finches like both of them too. The Orioles have a nest each year high up in some Poplars behind our house. I used to have a Oriole feeder that used nectar like the Hummingbird feeders, it was more trouble than it was worth.

Make sure the feeder is out prior to them coming north so they see it as they travel. In addition the the nectar feeder I put out an orange slice and grape jelly. They hung around all summer last year eating the jelly and orange slices. I just put mine out today, they usually come through Upstate NY at the end of April

Thank you for all the replies. I will try the jelly and oranges. Can I ask whether your feeders are in the open area? In a high position? The reason I ask-seems they are high in the trees, and not around the lower trees in the yard, unless I'm missing them.
By the way, where I put my hummingbird feeder-I have a wasp trap about 2'-3' away, and it does trap them. I get so many of them by that feeder :(

Mimilm, I put the orange halves and the jelly bowls right on my deck for the Orioles. They bring their babies right up to the deck too when they are big enough......

Mimilm - I only get the Baltimore Orioles for about a month before they head north, but I continue to have Orchard Orioles coming to my backyard throughout the Spring and Summer months. I've had great success by just putting a bowl with grape jelly or blackberry preserves on the railing of my deck. "My" Downy and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers like the jelly/preserves too! And for a special treat, I put fresh grapes in a suet feeder that I've enlarged by pulling the sides out some. Lots of different birds just love the fresh grapes! Kat_in_KS

Just a reminder to those of of us living in upper midwest(interstate 80 corridor). Later this week there is going to be a big surge of warm air... just as we approach the typical arrival time of orioles. As of a few days orioles were reported near the Missouri/Arkansas border. They will probably ride the upcoming strong south wind northward into our area, so don't forget to put up the feeders and orange halves. I'm putting mine out on Thursday when the warmth hits us(eastern Iowa).

I live in Southern Maryland, and have had a male Baltimore Oriole winter over at my feeder for the last 3 years. He left on Earth Day for his summer breeding territory so he's coming your way :-) I tried various foods for his dining pleasure, and he really liked dried pineapple (go figure--this isn't Hawaii) and peanut butter, but never touched the orange segments. Thanks for the idea about the grape jelly. I'm hoping he'll return next year, and I'll try him on that.

Hawkeye wx you were so right. After reading your post on 4/25, I looked out the window at the hummingbird feeder I put up (not yet sighted but in anticipation) and there was my handsome orange and black friend. For us, this is early. The arrival usually coincides with the apple blossoms and May 1. The House Wren returned today, too.

No orioles have been to my feeder, yet, but a couple were spotted today 100 miles east-southeast of me.

Hummers are now being seen across my area, but as far as I know none have visited my new feeder.

I haven't seen any yet either. I did see my first Hummer of the year today, I'm about 40 miles S of I-80 in Western IL. Lots of birds on the move this weekend. We had about 50 golden finches stop in yesterday at one time, then an Indigo Bunting stopped in to see what the excitement was all about.

I use to have an oriole feeder and they used it once in awhile. They are always on my hummingbird feeders. Even today I saw one on it. I have put oranges and jelly out in the past.
