You seem to be developing quite an interest in the birds around you! Bird watching is so much fun, I'm glad you've caught the bug. I think you need a good field guide. My favorite is the Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. There are certainly others however, that are equally good. All of these will provide range maps for each bird, showing where you can expect to see it in different seasons.

Another method, but more tedious, is to look at each woodpecker species at http://www.allaboutbirds.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=1189

Type "woodpecker" into the search box then go through each species and look at the range map to see what you might have.

Out of curiosity I went to the Yahoo homepage and input the phrase "Birds of Tennessee" and I got hundreds of hits for online sights.

I then further qualified the search by inputting "Birds of Tennessee Field Guide" and again I got hundreds of hits.

I am merely offering this as an example and it should in no wise be taken as an endorsement because I have no first hand personal knowledge of the book, however based upon the reviews it appears to be quite similar to a book I have here called "The Birds of Ohio" published by Lone Pine Press. My book is not only one of the best field guides I have seen, it also came with an audio/video CD that pictures the birds and gives examples of their calls.

There is another fantastic source of information that most people are totally unaware of. Most state universities have an "Agricultural Extension Service."

Here again, I am not familiar with Tennessee but I am sure their Agricultural Extension Service would be quite similar to what we have here in Ohio. Although the Agricultural Extension service primarily exists to provide information to the local farmers on the Ohio site they have sections that cover multiple categories that would be of interest to homeowners such as "Yard & Garden", "Wildlife", "household Tips", "Nutritional Information" etc.

What I found most interesting on our ag extension site was a long list of free bulletins that discuss how to establish bird & wildlife habitats, How to control or discourage Bird, animals and insect pests, Native plants and especially how to control noxious weeds.

We have a local Ag Extension Service Office nearby and they have been an invaluable source of information for me. Not only have they given me dozens of in depth bulletins on Bird Feeding, Bird Habitat and such, I have also sent them photos on numerous occasions for positive ID by their resident Ornithologist, and the best part, it is a totally free service.
