Ugh Lisa, we are in the same boat except for no hatchlings that I know of yet. BLues at the park due to hatch any day now, I had thought they would on Saturday but I think she maybe delayed the start of incubation during laying on a very cold wet weekend so that would mean hatching would be today or tomorrow. My Dees are due to hatch by Wednesday I believe. Two of our TRES have eggs but they are not incubating yet. Sounds like it won't get nice again until this coming weekend.....long week it will be.

same here Lisa...I have not even checked the box. I have been feeding the blues wax worms constantly!! Now we are supposed to get rain for 2 days!!! The tres have a finished nest but no eggs. This weather stinks and I feel so bad for the birds!!! On a good note; I have 2 female orioles building nests 3 feet apart on the same branch. This year I can watch them. Remember last year??? I didn't see the nests until they were feeding babies LOL I was watching this year. Keep your blue babies safe and I will do the same.

Karen, Im not so worried about the Blues just yet. At 1 week the parents can still keep them warm. I remember it's when they are nearing fledging that freezing temps are more dangerous. I was happy to see both parents spent the night on the babies. Looks like we may be done with freezing so I think they should be ok. I have the big bubble wrap on hand if it threatens again. It's still pretty windy so I am waiting a couple more hours to check on them. I am so worried about my TRES, I wish there were some way to assist in feeding the adults in this weather, you can feed babies but does no good if the adults don't make it. Saying prayers for all of our birds!

Lisa, I'm with you. I can supplement the Blues, and I have had to quite a bit because of the cold, rain, and terribly windy conditions. But the poor Tree Swallows I worry about. It is warmer here today, though still very windy. I have lived here 30 years and have never seen this much wind for so long in my life. The wind actually twisted the Bluebird's box so it was facing a different direction on the pole. It has a screw through it to prevent that from happening, but it did anyway. I thought about fixing it, but the Blues were finding their way in, so I let it be. It is supposed to finally calm down here tomorrow. I hope your weather improves too.

I am happy to report that all 5 babies are alive and breathing, color looks good. Not very active but then I did not expect them to be, they are playing dead well. I took more worms out and again Mom and Dad made many trips to the box. A quick look hoping to not chill them and I think all is well (though a little strained) in the BB box. Moma TRES has covered both of her eggs and did not lay one today, not sure what this means but I am hoping for the best. She has been in and out quite a bit today. I hope she has enough strength to make it through the next few cold rainy days!

Goodness Lisa, I'm glad you didn't make the same mistake I did!

By the time I had a mix of food out it was too late...I have this awful regret...wish I would have supplemented them sooner...What an awful mistake! Hitting myself over the head (Sarcasm) a mil. times over for this.

If you remeber I told you to feed them, but I know you are somewhat new to this, we all make mistakes, dont beat yourself up. I lost 3 TRES last year I should have fed at fledging and I didn't ( I left it to the parent). I will never let another baby starve on my watch again! You let Nature take it's course, some folks say thats what you do. I don't agree, we have altered Natures course, last year Nature had nothing to do with a TRES being hit by a car. Nature didnt ask for one parent to care for 6 babies in horrid weather. I fed those babies against the law or not , I don't care. 3 of them made it. 0 would have made it had I not interviened. Be prepared for these situations. We are all here to help you and if that means breaking the law to save a baby so be it.

Lisa, two pairs of my TRES that had started laying on Thursday both stopped with 3 eggs, last one was laid on Saturday, nothing on Sunday or today. No clue what will happen now as the weather isn't supposed to get warmer until the weekened, tomorrow only in the 40's and rainy. My TRES dissappear in this weather, I am sure they head south a bit for food or what but I read they will travel long distances in search of food in bad weather.

Lisa, I love your attitude! How do you feed TRES babies? That had never occurred to me. I think it's awesome that you saved those three babies. From my experience, when the weather gets cold, the TRES head to water to feed. Sometimes I will see 40 to 60 of them gleaning insects off the surface of the water. I think they cover the eggs so predators like HOWR will be less likely to see them while they're gone. I remember reading something on the Sialis website about that.
