Mockingbird Woes

I have always loved having a mockingbird visiting my yard, and I've never had problems with them. However, now I have one that is guarding the meal worm feeder and gobbles up all of them before the blues can get to them.

The blue babies fledged about a week and a half ago, but the parents still come back for the mealies and to check out the box. I was thinking that they'd be building a new nest for another brood soon, but I'm not sure they will now. The Mocker sits on my fence guarding the backyard, and even sits on the bluebird house. He checks the feeder often.

I put out the wormies early this morning, and the blues were watching me do it from the rooftop. Before they could get to them the mocker got them first. So I put out more, but same story. Even if the blues decide to build somewhere else, I still enjoy feeding them and have a large supply of the meal worms on hand. I guess I will be feeding mockingbirds instead ... right? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with two mockers who love chasing off other birds. You need to get a special mealworm feeder. Mine came from the Bluebird Nut Cafe (I think)..it's called the deluxe mealworm feeder, round, cage style with a top, and a blue dish in the middle. Mockers and other large birds cannot enter, but the smaller birds can. It may take a few days or perhaps a week, but the blues will figure it out! The feeder is a little pricey, but well worth it.

Mockers are notorious for being very territorial, especially near their food sources.

My five baby blues fledged several days ago, but before that, those two mockers were driving Mama and Daddy blue nuts! Other than the mealworm feeder, the only other solution I can think of would be to quit putting out the mealies for awhile in hopes the mockers will move on. I don't have a clue whether that would work!

Thanks for the idea, Donna. I truly love the mockingbirds. And this couple has been here a lot longer than the blues have, and have never been a problem. Everywhere I've lived I always only had one or two and they would keep me entertained with their lovely songs. They've never bothered the blues. But it's pretty obvious that this one has claimed my backyard because it knows there are 'goodies' here. The mocker babies hopped around in my backyard until they got strong enough to fly off, and they occasionally visit my wax myrtles. I love their little chirps. I really wouldn't mind feeding the mockers too, if they wouldn't be so greedy. I'm afraid the blues will not build here again because of their aggression. I'll check out the website you suggested.

Bluegirl, that's a good point about adjusting to whatever your experience says is normal - like traffic noises or train sounds if you live near their passages, or heat in a Nevada summer, or cold in a Minnesota winter. It's just what you expect and we build positive associations with it for the pleasant events that happen in that period. As a relative outsider to cicadas, the negative associations have gotten firmly established before any positive ones could set in. Tammy and MG have plenty of their own negative experiences too, and if they start laying eggs in my rose canes we'll definitely move them into my mental "bad bug" category. Of course, I'm not big on loud repetitive uncontrollable sounds anyway - having lived in landlocked places all my life I find the sounds of ocean waves to be slightly disturbing and annoying, though not to the same extent. I'd way rather listen to crickets chirping than a tape of ocean sounds during "deep relaxation" parts of yoga class, but I realize I'm in the minority here. So, Michael, if these chirping sounds are all mating behaviors, does that mean that crickets and grasshoppers are just more, um, horny than other bugs, or is it that they have quicker life cycles and we're hearing new generations of cricket males like perpetual teenagers desperate for a date on Saturday night? You'd think if the same old thing didn't get results last night, they'd give up or try something new, but I guess that doesn't apply to teenagers either... Cynthia

When you see an adult red-shouldered, it is pretty easy to identify, and you can always tell by their calls. Nothing else sounds quite like them, not even red-taileds. But those dang juveniles are real tricky, at least for me. I love to watch sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks hunting. They are so beautifully designed to swoop through the trees, turning on a dime to avoid branches. And their aim is deadly. Woe be unto any small birds in their path! As much as I love my songbirds, I still enjoy watching the sharpies hunt, but I prefer to see them do it somewhere other than my yard. Some of you know that I did not have one single bird at my feeders or birdbaths for 9 months last year when a pair of red-shouldered hawks took up residence in my oak trees. They were beautiful to watch, but it wasn't a good trade. I wanted my birdies back, and was so glad to see all the good ones this spring. They disappear when our neighborhood bald eagle stops by, too, btw. Even though he never hunts songbirds. (He's usually looking to steal some roadkill from the vultures.) Things are pretty quiet right now, though. A few cardinals, a bluejay or two, and my mourning doves and white-winged doves. That's about all I see now that summer is in full swing. Marcia

Well, all, I don't think it is the lack of rain, Kay County has had a bunch this July. One storm dumped just under 4 in. I think it might have been the dangerous weather here. 100mph winds. I don't have the woodpeckers this year either, the old maple tree, that they usually nest in, lost two big limbs, one last year, one a few weeks ago. Woodpeckers have used that tree for about 20 years. They must have known something we didn't. Buuuuut I did see a hummer in my Mimosa tree day before yesterday, made me so happy. First one this year. Also haven't seen many Cardinals either. Oh, the butterflies, have only seen white ones and have lots of flowers for both butterflies and hummers. Must tell everyone that the birdhouse that I got at the herb festival in Jenks, south of Tulsa,last year, had baby finches in it this year. Anyway, I think they were finches, tiny little dark colored birds. Very fussy parents while I was filling the finch feeder next to the birdhouse. So funny.

The numerous mockingbirds around here are driving me nuts. They "claim" the bluebird feeders, even if they can not fit through the openings, and will not allow the blues to eat. I didn't want to stop placing suet and mealworms out. We have had a very wet spring and a total of 10 hungry baby blues. Maybe there is adequate food without the mealworms and suet, I just didn't want to have to worry about it. The only thing that has worked for me is to actually guard the feeders and keep the mockingbirds away. Sometimes I wait somewhere near the feeder (usually about 10-15 feet away) and sometimes I use a slingshot from inside my office window. The blues learned very quickly that my "antics" were not directed at them. They land in a branch overhead, wait for me to run off the mockingbirds, and then go into the feeder without hesitation. This is our routine early morning and early evening. If I'm lucky, on occasion, we get a mid-day feeding/guarding time.
