I hear BB babies in the BB box

Actually, I've been hearing them for a while, they are pretty noisy. Mom and Pop are flying back and forth all day feeding them.

Honestly, I'm holding my breath! We have an organic yard and garden about an acre. Lots of birds! And we have a hawk hanging around the yard. Yesterday, he flew back and forth over the east yard where my BB box with five healthy happy babies are living. He won't go away!

Yes, I keep trying to run him off, and he comes right back. You have no idea how protective I am of these babies! It worries me to death to think something could happen to them!

PS Oh, I saved a chickadee baby a few days ago. I heard his distress call, before the hawk did! Got him to wildlife rescue, where he is doing fine. Will be released today!

Bless your heart. We do worry about our Blues, don't we? Well, the hawk isn't going to get the babies while they are inside the box. Mom and Dad are at risk though. Honestly, there is really not a thing that we can do to keep the hawks out of our yards. If you have bird feeders, they might draw the hawks in for a try at the pool of feeder birds. Were you sure that the Chickadee baby had been abandoned? Many times, the parents are nearby even when we don't see them. I wish you the very best of luck, and I hope that your Blue babies successfully fledge and grow to adulthood!! :o)

Renee: I really wonder if she will nest more than three times, regardless of how early she starts. In 2005 we had an early Spring here in Virginia and my first brood hatched out on March 3rd. I was so excited, thinking she might nest four times. When the third brood fledged in late June I really thought there was a chance. I cleaned out the nest box hopefully but she showed no interest at all. She had fledged 13 new bluebirds and she was DONE! I have heard that it has happened on rare occasion, but I have never talked to anyone who actually witnessed it. Anyone here ever see it first hand? Dave

Need advice on sparrow spooker on BB box

I have another box that is empty and one more that has tres. in it. The female blue is building so fast, I think she will have her nest done today. I put a spooker in the tres box because I had a male hosp. trapped in another box and I can't get him out myself...I have to have my husband help me. The damn female hosp. found a new mate in 10 minutes and went after the tres. nest box so I HAD to put a spooker up. It kept the sparrows away. When my husband got home I took care of the hosp and now there is an empty box. I think the dang wrens are after that box. The blues booted them from the one they have now. I don't care if the hosp. and wrens fight over a box. Hopefully she will lay an egg soon so I can get the spooker up.

My guess is they are cowbird eggs. Very gently remove the brown speckled eggs (as not to crack the bb eggs) they will hatch before the bluebird eggs do and will eventually take over the nest box and the baby blues probably will not survive. I get them in the poor chipping sparrows nest and the cowbird babies are bigger than the nest. The chipping sparrow eggs are thrown out of the nest by the baby cowbirds. Karen

Blue Jays can be very aggressive, especially around feeders. If they, or mockingbirds, or robins, discover the mealworms, the bluebirds don't have a chance. I do not have seed feeders, so that was not a problem for me. You will have to "train" the bluebirds that there are mealworms, without somehow "training" the other birds. Here is a great web site for hosting cavity nesters, including a page about feeding mealworms. I have a hawk that moved in this year in our neighborhood. At first he didn't come around my yard, but yesterday I came out the back deck and he was perched on a short limb on a tree 10 feet from our deck. I wish I could get rid of him - scare him/her away somehow. The little songbirds are everywhere in my yard: Bluebirds, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Chickadees, Hummingbirds and yesterday I saw the first Cardinals (4 of them). I hate for the hawk to have a single unfulfilling meal of these beautiful birds.
