"The operating mechanism is not load bearing" I am aware of that technically, although it definitely holds weight when open, but I wanted to know if it were Truth type crank operator or a push out operator? Is there a stay arm or anything at the head? I would be inclined to try and replace the continuous hinge with butt hinges, most large windows I am aware of use multiple butt hinges. You get more bite at the jamb for sure. But without better pictures it is tough to be sure what may help. * Did not change my post but the OP 2nd post was edited while I was responding.
