and now the wrens are here!

We just finished a major battle with the sparrows. This morning we have wrens. We found sticks in one of our bluebird houses which we cleaned out and are getting ready to move. Do the spookers work to keep the wrens away?

What other advise on wrens can you give me?

Momma blue has 3 eggs as of yesterday! I just want to see

this nest raised and flying!

You need to put wren guards on your houses after the first egg is laid. Unfortunately after the wren has already found the house they may not work. Go to http://www.sialis.org/wrens.htm to learn how to make one. I'm sorry you're having wren problems. They're worse than house sparrows.

I have bb nestlings in one box and they are 9days old. And I have two other boxes up. Wouldnt you know that a wren has taken up residence in one,about 50 ft away from my bb box. Do I take the other boxes down until they fledge? If I do that I am afraid they will try to make a nest in bb box where my nestlings are.

Well, it seems like a lot, but only clout when it didn't work salt and spot treatment. I did much research, and apparently this caluflower growth is common, not sure if bacterial or viral (uk newsletter) but did have thin white thread from center, which another poster noted as well. They usually don't survive these growths, what ever they are, but he is ok... and it has not re-occured. I try not to use meds, but when desperate. Well, he is fine now... no new growth (knock on wood).. I agree, salt and easy does it.. but if parasitical then..... PS. at my local store, I noticed they come in medicated, water was blue. I didn't know this. I just got there one day when fish came in. I was pretty astounded at how rudely they were treated, after all they had just been through. Tossed, no regard at all. (They could use mild salt instead without as much harm during transport)... at mine they are pretty cruel... dump them in after washing them off in tap water rinse, no temp adjustment or anything! Just pour bag into net with fish, then rince off, like dishes. Then dump in tank. They have huge die offs. When they clean, they run a hose into tank and some guy who doesn't know squat, once had temp over 90 degrees. They scalded a poor Oscar. I have actually decided just tonight, that sans a good dealer and good water, (seems hard in NYC - best outer boroughs which is hard for me to get to) I will wind things down. I never had these problems when younger, never. I know the water is bad, is brown and have always used a shower filter, and age mine for aquariums in addition. I never drank the tap water, had it tested once and horrible.

Dedtired, 'troop' of kangaroos is an accepted collective noun, but that which is more commonly used is a 'mob' of kangaroos. We have had a particularly cold snap and areas that haven't had snow for decades are enjoying it. Thanks Nicknack! Now that I have read up on it, we did check an "empy bluebird house and find a wren nest. It does have the white cocoons in it. We destroyed the nest.
That box is located in the front acre of our property near an old barn and shed which is on our neighbors property.
Our Blubirds are in the back acre with the tree sparrow nest which has babies.
Should we take down the empty boxes in the front or leave them? Like sagrinin, I am worried they will mess with my two other nests.

Sagrinin, Nine day old Bluebird babies are no longer in danger from House Wrens. They are now too big to toss so they should be just fine.

Sounds like you both got good advice.

sagrinin...I would just keep removing the sticks and definately not let the wren nest there.

Checked the box today. Still only see 3 nestlings. One was out of the nest and on the side of it and had white furry looking stuff on it. They were all breathing. Guess it is time to let them be. They are 11 days old.

white furry looking stuff?? Can you take a photo of it? I can't imagine what it might be. Hope it is ok!

Hope it is ok too. The other ones were still in the nest. I will try to take a picture of it. I am almost afraid to open the box for fear they will fall out since that one was on the side of the nest.

Donna, babies are fine, all in the nest with their blue feathers. Still just 3. They are so cute! All seem to be ok. Guess the 4th egg didn't hatch, haven't seen it though.
