unhatched egg

I took the wren guard down for just a minute this morning so that I could get a good look in the box.There is one unhatched egg,the others hatched yesterday.How long should I leave it in there?Is there a chance it will still hatch?I've had this before,but cannot remember how long to leave it there.Otherwise all is well.Thanks.Jane

You will get different opinions on leaving the egg versus taking it out. I live in Southeast Texas so it gets very hot. During the early season when temperatures are moderate, I leave the eggs. If a brood is in July heat, I remove the egg about 4 days after the others have hatched.

I'd wait at least another day, but when did the first egg hatch? Our first brood of 4 last year hatched over a 3 day period. 2 hatched on the 24th of the month, 1 on the 25th and the last was found to be hatched when we looked in on the 26th...

Unfortunately I did not date the eggs under the hen, so I don't know how old the unhatched ones are. I'll know better next time! The hen and chick are both eating fine -- the hen has made the effort to show the chick "oh, look, here's something really really good" and wait for the chick to show that it knows to eat. And they have their own water in their crate, too. So I'm not really concerned about nourishment. The other hens seem fascinated by the "peep peeping" -- they even hesitated to go outside this morning when I opened their yard door! (But then they decided to go outside anyway!) I'm hoping that having the hen and chick behind the crate door for a while will make them safer when I let them out into the general population. Thanks for the help! --Johanna

Thanks Kenn, I don't think the others will hatch either. The one hatchling is doing great. It is being fed and watched over by Mama, Daddy and 4 brothers and sisters from the first nesting. I see them perched on the light line near the box about every day. Mama is feeding it faithfully and it looks like its thriving Don't know If the baby hatched from the 1ST egg or the 4TH either way I will remove them by Tuesday If nothing happens. Are the parents capable of removing unhatched eggs? It has been so hot here! I would hate for the remaining eggs to crack and spill out in the nest.

No one is forcing you to do anything if you are not comfortable doing it. Sealing a crack in an egg with melted wax is a common practice in aviculture and can be extended to the wild ones too. Of course one would handle the egg while wearing gloves so the oil from the fingers does not clog up the pores of the shell. While the egg is candled, the full extent of the crack or defect can be visualized and sealed with the wax. One can always practice on an unhatched egg that's found in an empty nest, again to get the feel for the technique. One only covers the defect and extend the seal a little beyond the edges. Again don't try new things if you are not comfortable doing them. Let Nature take over. :-)

No, not necessarily. Sometimes you'll have a big gap between first and last to hatch. The longest gap I had was 40 hours and when it was time for the five to fledge the baby who hatched late was far from ready. That didn't stop him from jumping out of the box but he could not fly so he spent the night back in the box with a one inch hole reducer added (I was prepared and already had the reducer). I'd give unhatched eggs three FULL days from the time the first hatched before deciding they are infertile.

One other thought.... I believe if there's something wrong with the egg Mama will either bury it in the nest or remove it.... so I'd leave it alone.

If it were to hatch 3 days later, the chick would be so far behind the others, it would not likely be able to compete for food, etc. Those babies grow so fast! If you want to remove the egg, it must be done very carefully. To break the egg accidentally in the nest would be a very bad thing. You could lift it out with a spoon; safer than clumsy fingers.

I checked the box when I came home today and the unhatched egg was still there.I removed it with a spoon as suggested,it was definately not fertile,so I am glad I did remove it before it became a problem.I agree if it hatched too much later than the others,it would be fighting for food.However that was not the case,so all is well and there are 4 beautiful babies in the box.Now to decide how long to leave the wren guard on.Decisions,decisions.Who said this wasn't work?But it sure is enjoyable.Happy bluebirding to all.......Jane
