Unhatched egg

Four eggs were laid. Three have hatched, and the babes are growing by leaps and bounds. One egg, still intact, has been pushed up to the top edge of the nest. What should be done with this egg? Is there a point at which to remove it and should that wait until the box is cleaned out?

If you can remove it without breaking it I would remove it, maybe use a spoon to scoop it up. I have had this happen two years in a row down at the park where I monitor nestboxes. Usually I don't see it until the babies fledge as the other hatchlings seem to hide it well.

This happened to me last year. My husband actually removed two eggs when there was a live baby inside. He slept through the entire thing.

He took a piece of heavy cardboard and carefully slid the nest on to it. Then, using a spoon that was bent (like what you would use to dip easter eggs) he carefully lifted out both eggs and handed them to me. Then he slid the nest back into the box.

The two eggs hadn't developed (it was during a really hot spell and they were almost like boiled eggs). Removing them gave the surviving baby more room in the nest and he really seemed to appreciate that. He fledged a week later.

Unfortunately I did not date the eggs under the hen, so I don't know how old the unhatched ones are. I'll know better next time! The hen and chick are both eating fine -- the hen has made the effort to show the chick "oh, look, here's something really really good" and wait for the chick to show that it knows to eat. And they have their own water in their crate, too. So I'm not really concerned about nourishment. The other hens seem fascinated by the "peep peeping" -- they even hesitated to go outside this morning when I opened their yard door! (But then they decided to go outside anyway!) I'm hoping that having the hen and chick behind the crate door for a while will make them safer when I let them out into the general population. Thanks for the help! --Johanna

I know birds drop the poop sacks in the pond to not leave a scent, was thinking that may be why the egg was there. No trees over the pond so it had to have been put there.

Baby is now 15 days old. Parents continue to feed. The last two mornings strange activity. The parents showed up for morning mealworms. I looked out and see 3-4 juveniles. At least I think they are. They are light brown with bright blue edgings sling their wings. They have spotted streaked breasts with hints of color. I thin they are the hatchlings from the first brood raised away from here. The parents spend time shooing them away from the box. They sit along the fence jostling each other for a better vantage spot. These juvis keep trying to enter the box but mom and dad are having no part of it.

We have 3 unhatched eggs out of 4 as of this moment. In the past there has been maybe one here or there and it always seems to 'disappear' ... i.e we think Mama deals with its removal. This time though, if nothing happens in the next few days we'll be following your advice Tara. : (

I too am noticing an unusual amount of unhatched eggs. Around the house there are the following nests:

-EABL - 3 of 5 flegged - 2 unhatched eggs
-TRES 4 of 6 eggs hatched
-TRES - 5 eggs - waiting to hatch
-Robin - 1 of 4 eggs hatched

Whats going on? Global warming?
