we have had a mild winter here as far as snow its way below normal but have had lots of cold nights and mostly sunny days. just patches of snow left on the ground. the red wing blackbirds are already here a month early and a couple Lewis's woodpeckers also here ahead of normal I get eurasian doves year around but the mourning does just spend the spring and summer and i have a pair of the mourning here this week that are also a month early. The evening grosbeaks usually leave out in late fall and come back in spring but a flock has stayed around all winter.
the nuthatches and tits and chickadees usually stay all winter and leave out in spring but they have already started to move uphill into the mountains.there has been several sightings of orioles just 50 miles south of here this week a month early

Central Iowa here....no robins that I have seen....but this afternoon the turkey vultures returned....at least there were about 20 in the sky.
How do they know????

Upstate NY- I was out driving today. Clusters of about 10 to 20 robins everywhere. Probably saw about 200 or more in all. Also saw a bald eagle. Our hawk watch has been counting these, but hard to tell locals from migrating sometimes because there are so many more locals than ever before. The golden eagles are also moving through too. Think I spotted the wag-tail flying of a song sparrow.

This is so exciting. I became interested in backyard birding in the summer so this is my first spring migration. How long does it go for? Right now it is 61, sunny, and the door and windows are open. There are so many singing birds (and sports cars lol)

I do believe my Juncos are gone though, which makes me a little sad.

it will depend a lot on your climate and seasons and when the trees and flowers start to bloom and the insects come out. most of the summer song birds show up here mid april to late april and they do eat lots of insects and sip necter from the fruit blooms and flowers. they suppliment that with necter from the feeders or fruit or jelly or mealworms or raisen at the feeders. the hummingbirds are last to show up often early to mid may and eat lots of insects but suppliment it with flowers and blooms and necter feeders. the grosbeaks and buntings come thru in may and june and the red wing blackbirds and cowbirds and mourning doves show up early spring. they want mostly seeds and nuts and grains

All of them...the sandhill cranes were here end of Feb, i thought maybe they were transients, but I'm still hearing them. First week of March, i had redwing blackbirds and killdeer, the 7th i had robins. All at least 2 weeks early, and they gotta be lovin it!

Western, MA here and right now I have two morning doves along with one lone Junco, sitting in my backyard on the grass under the feeders, enjoying the sun. It's been pretty mild here the past few days, mid 60s and Monday, it was around 70 degrees. I love this time of year, providing we don't get too much rain. I haven't seen any robins yet. I've had cardinals, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, juncos and sparrows all winter long. I thought that the juncos had left, but where there is one out there lounging with the morning doves, they must still be around. There have been quite a few finches out on the feeders also. I can't wait until the goldfinches begin turning yellow. Even thought it's been a pretty mild winter, I am so looking forward to the spring.
