Carolina Wren nest

I've been working in the yard a lot & leave my garage door open while I do. Nearly every time I go back into the garage a Carolina Wren is in it. Yesterday I was looking for tool & looked in a nail pouch on my carpenters tool belt hanging on the wall. The wren has been building a nest in the pouch. What type of nest site do they prefer. Since the wren has no access to the pouch when the door is closed I took the pouch off of the belt & hung it under the eave next to the garage door.

wrens will build nests almost any sheltered place they can get to. in garages and storage sheds they use boots and shoes and empty boxes and pipes and cans and bottles and even in jackets or hanging coveralls and coats. they build in flower planters and pots and buckets and in cars that are parked with windows down. they nest in mail boxes and newpaper boxes and i even found a nest one time in a porch swing.

This is an issue which I have encountered many times in the past. Those silly Carolina Wrens will always choose the oddest places for their nests! You can hang all the wonderful "Wren" boxes that you want, and they will ignore them and go and build a nest inside your garden clogs. :0) It is VERY common for them to sneak into garages and find a little nook to build in. I had them build inside a Walmart bag that was full of rags and hanging inside my garage. I ended up moving the whole bag of rags with the nest inside to the outside wall of my house underneath an eave. Do you think that my neighbors thought that I was a bit "off" when they saw me hanging a plastic Walmart bag full of rags onto the outside of my house? LOL.. The Wrens went right to that bag and hatched, raised, and fledged their brood from it without problems!! So, I say, good for you!! I think that you did just the right thing. :o)

I would not be surprised. Yesterday I witnessed something very similar-only the reverse. I have a mama robin in a nest near my front window. I was in the garden and I heard her peeping wildly. When I came around the corner, there were 5 blackbirds harassing her---getting close to her nest and posing a threat. I tried to shoo them away, but they ignored me and were too high up. Then I noticed about 4 other robins and a couple of wrens flying in and they chased the blackbirds off to a tree across the street. Mama robin settled back into her nest with her two babies. The other birds sat in her tree for a little while and then flew off. I was really impressed. Mother Nature is really heartwarming at times...so yes, your little robin could indeed be helping out a friend. :)

I'm really sorry your babies were taken and the nest destroyed. Is the nestbox on a metal pole with a baffle? If not, that could be the problem. Raccoons are everywhere, even if you haven't seen one. If the box is mounted on a wooden pole or a fence it is easy for a raccoon, a cat or any other climbing animal to get to it. If you haven't already looked at the sialis.org website you should spend some time reading and make sure you have a proper setup. You know, even when you are being really careful sometimes tragedy just happens. I don't put out any feeders at all because I'm afraid of bears coming around for food. I know the birds have plenty of natural food and if they can't make it out there then maybe they shouldn't.

These little cutie pies are one of my favs! I've had them nesting around my house for several years, and they are well known for nesting in very unusual places! A friend of mine had them nesting in a football helmet on a shelf in her garage! I find it best not to peek at them at all, but you can observe from short distance. As long as the parents are going in and out, everything should be OK. As fledging draws near, don't be alarmed if the parents are not frequenting the nest as often as they did when the babies were young. I was fortunate to see a group fledge last year, but this year, they fledged when I was not at home! They are such fun little birds to watch!

Hey Susan.....I went out and carefully checked on the nest and the little ones seemed fine. But they next day they fledged. So I'm thinking the mom was yelling at them to get going! Your experience was really cool! It must have made you feel really good to help them! Pat......hmmmm....isn't that curious that you haven't seen any yet? They are pretty neat birds. They're always finding funny places to nest. One year, we had a table saw on our covered porch with a tarp over it through winter. We went to use it in the spring and there was a nest of baby wrens under the tarp! So we had to wait until they fledged to use the saw. haha I'll tell some of mine to come your way!

One year I had Carolina Wrens build a nest in my shed, so I had to tie the door open until the young fledged. Another year I had American Robins build a nest in my garage rafters, and again, had to tie the door open to give them access until the young fledged. We're now a lot more careful about leaving doors open. I think your idea of hanging it under the eves outside is a good one. I couldn't do that because they had already built their nests on inside rafters. Did the parent birds find their nest's new location?

I've checked the tool bag & the nest has been worked on. Leaving the door open is not an option. Too many expensive tools.
