Carolina Wrens nest in fern

Hi all

The wrens that built a nest in my door wreath last summer built one in my giant Boston fern this summer! I'm so thrilled - the nest looks like a small tunnel entrance into the reedy part of the plant. It's a huge fern in a 5 gallon pot, and I guess the wrens wove together some of the leafless stalks and turned it into a nest. What a thrill!! Will post pictures soon.

I wish some Carolina Wrens would nest here but they never do. I would even be very happy with House Finches in any hanging pots but I never get them nesting either. You are so lucky!!!!

I have Carolina wrens in a bird house under my carport. It took a bit of persuation to get this fellow to accept the box. He really wanted to nest in the garage.

I would not be surprised. Yesterday I witnessed something very similar-only the reverse. I have a mama robin in a nest near my front window. I was in the garden and I heard her peeping wildly. When I came around the corner, there were 5 blackbirds harassing her---getting close to her nest and posing a threat. I tried to shoo them away, but they ignored me and were too high up. Then I noticed about 4 other robins and a couple of wrens flying in and they chased the blackbirds off to a tree across the street. Mama robin settled back into her nest with her two babies. The other birds sat in her tree for a little while and then flew off. I was really impressed. Mother Nature is really heartwarming at times...so yes, your little robin could indeed be helping out a friend. :)

Tara, I would leave the eggs alone as there is a good chance Mama hasn't really abandoned them. She knows where they are. Carolina wrens normally build a dome shaped nest and will add material on top to conceal it. I had them nesting last year in a wall planter and the only time I checked the nest was before she laid eggs and you couldn't even see the nest, as the bottom seemed pretty deep into the dirt. Since you posted this on Friday, do you have an update? I'd love to know. Donna

They don't always build their nests in the best places. I had a Carolina wren build a nest in an orchid pot and the weather suddenly became extremely hot. I had to move the orchid into the shade. Either this scared her off or she'd already seen her "mistake" and moved on because no eggs appeared. I agree you shouldn't interfere. If she built the nest in a bad place, well, it's called survival of the fittest. But they'll probably be fine. Babies' mouths are usually wide open.

I have Carolina Wrens nesting in a hanging plant pot on my deck. They were actually there last summer too....they had a brood last summer and again this summer. It's so much fun to watch them. I think the babies were born last Sat as they have been coming back and forth quite frequently with food. Oddly enough I don't notice them singing until after the babies are born. Everything I read said they do not use the same next twice, but they refurbished the nest from last year and to my delight are back....I'll be so sad when they leave.
