They've Gave Up Already?!!!!

Those of you who have followed my stories know what happened. I lost 5 bluebird nestlings.

Now, this morning the bluebirds were nowhere to be found, and a tree swallow flew out of their box.

I'm starting to hate swallows. They just dive dive dive at you and try to take over every box! Someone must be overproducing these birds!

I can't believe it! These birds are rediculous! So what do you guys think? Did the bluebirds go elsewhere to nest! This is so sad! I'm thinking about moving my boxes.

Your Blues are fine. They will not try to renest in one day. Did you even leave the nest in long enough for the Blues to find their babies had died? In my experience they will kick out the Tres if they really want a box. You could put out another box. You could put it back to back with the box the Tres are in. My Tres won't let any other Tres in my yard but will allow the Blues. Back to back pairing of boxes will not result in two boxes of Tres. It is illegal to disturb the nest of a native bird and the dive bombing I find both gutsy and charming. Be patient they need some time and none of us can control everything that goes on in our yards. Like kids you can't really make them do things your way.

Okay the male blue is around. The female may have left or got killed.

I think I'm gonna set up a 2nd paired box for the swallows.

That depends on what kind of Foxglove you bought. What does your tag say? Digitalis purpurea is a biennial foxglove, that produces a rosette of basal leaves the first year, then sends flower spikes up the 2nd year. Then it usually dies back, but sometimes it will bloom a bit a 3rd year, especially if you deadhead the spent blooms and don't allow it to go to seed. Digitalis grandiflora is a perennial foxglove and usually has light yellow flowers. Digitalis x mertonensis is a hybrid between the two and is a short-lived perennial, and may bloom for 2 or 3 years. If you have the Digitalis purpurea, does it look like it already formed flower spikes? If so, then it has bloomed already and is unlikely to bloom again. It forms big clumps of leaves the first year that look like this picture, so if it looks like this then it is going to bloom next year (usually in June).

Bigoledude, I'm just up the highway from you in Baton Rouge. My shallots are just now beginning to show as you described. When it begins to get warmer the tender green tops will decrease. The plants will begin to feed the main flower stems. About this time bulb clusters will begin to form. Although I lose a good amount, I remove the main flower stem and use the remaining parts. So I would therefore say that the plants are not "finished". Once the shallots look dry and toasty, the bulb clusters can be removed. Use them in cooking. But, be sure to save as many bulbs as you need for planting in August or September and continuing into the Fall. You can try the dig-and-replant tactic but I've had limited success with this approach. It seemz that our hot weather still takes it's toll.

LOL! Oh we knew how much room they would take. We just know how to pack. We really had room for one or two more. Darn that we didn't look around quick and add a couple more. :) And we should mention that we were bringing back plants for two other people too. :) And we won't get back until next year, so we had to make it worthwhile. :) I think we should all meet at Jim's next year for a hosta forum get together. I will bring the cookies! What do you think Jim? By the way, we had so much fun at Jim's and his garden's are gorgeous! I will try to put photos up in the next couple of days, but it might be a bit longer. Next week is RAGBRAI here in Iowa.

I received two private e-mails telling me to refire & that the paint would come right off. The people that wrote said this is what they've done before. I tried soaking them in water to see if the paint would just bubble up & peel right off, like on terra cotta, but not so. But then again, the paint didn't soak in because I was able to scratch some off. It's just too much work to scrub for hours to remove the paint. Yet, it's probably too expensive to refire the items just to resell them for pennies. Sigh.

She is still around. They won't hang around your yard unless they are actively nesting or getting food there. Patience.

Yes,If you have TRES and EABL competing for boxes,The best thing you can do is pair your boxes.

Well I went to trap HOSP at a trail of my relatives (Got 3 BTW, 2 males, 1 female) and put a spooker on their box that has 2 BB eggs (Yay! Atleast I have that to look foreward to!)

And now the Swallows are gone and yep..you guessed it...a male HOSP trying to take over the box!He had 2 females around him!

Also, for payback I obliterated a HOSP nest of eggs in my neighbor's martin house.

If I get a hold of this bird...I may literally pull it's head off! That chirping is making me violent. The BBS are still around.

Would they already be looking for a new place to nest? Surely they'll give it another go? Becuase losing the young...I (Unfortunately) put the blame on them...when it was 70 one evening they did a VERY poor job...that's why these young were lost.

Another thing...I had to take the nest out and it blew around into pieces. Should I let them build another nest?
