These things are addictive. I'm now watching eagles, hawks, and herons in their nests. Maybe I should get a life? or at least a TV?

What a great bird cam. Thanks for posting. I'm bookmarking it to check back once something is happening. I like that it is so close up and there's a live chat keeping viewers informed on what's happening. Nice to hear the background birdsong also.

We had the same problem last year within a couple of months of building our first pond. I actually saw a heron land on our garage roof days after a comet came up missing...and I live on a busy street in the city! Forunately it did not get any of the 3 koi, but still :( We immediately went out and got a net to cover the pond and then bought a couple of "scarecrows" that are motion activated "water shooters". Although the net is not the most pleasant looking feature of the pond, we remove it when we have a day off and feel the fish are a lot safer while we are at work. The scarecrows had the added effect of detering stray cats from taking up residence in the yard!

Oh she is so beautiful! So now I am watching eagles, Canadas and Blue Herons! This is what my daughter posted on my FB link this morning: "Oh my lord. Another spring play-by-play of mothers little geese friends.....;p. Xoxo " Here is my reply: "You are gonna miss me when I'm gone! Lol! Brought to you by the Bird Whisperer! XXXXOOOO". It's cool and windy today and expecting rain. I can't think of a better way to spend such an afternoon! :) Ginny

The ripples on the Blue Angel are set off so nicely by the smooth water. Everything looks fabulously happy! I wish I could have a pond. I was told by a friend that raccoons and Great Blue Herons will wipe out the koi in a pond. Her pond was raided by a heron, who went on to clean out everyone's pond in the neighorhood. Naughty bird! (but oh so cool-looking) We have both raccoons and herons around here, so I guess I can't have a little fishy pond. boo hoo.

Yes, it is fun to watch them fishing, especially the Great Blue Herons, who just stand hunched over in shallow water for several minutes not moving at all, looking like a large grey blue rock, and then suddenly in a blink extend their neck to its long long mode to grab a fish. Today we saw one of the green heron nestlings standing on a branch way down about 2 feet above the water. Then an egret came flying up the creek, and startled the heron chick, who promptly flew away! So, I guess I need to call them fledglings from now on. It is amazing how fast they grew. Jackie

The female heron was attacked by a Great Horned Owl twice, early in the morning on April 8 and 9, while she was incubating the eggs. She wasn't noticeably harmed and the eggs are OK. No attack this morning.

A little unpleasant reality injected into the pastoral scene.
