Red wing blackbirds are back

We heard the distinctive trill of rwbb's yesterday! DH buys a bag of cracked corn every spring to throw out for them, they love it. They also enjoy safflower, suet, etc.We always feel like spring is in sight when they arrive, it was so nice to see & hear them.

I also heard the red-winged blackbirds a few days ago. I didn't think they'd be back yet. By today there were quite a few of them.

RW blackbirds always arrive within a couple days of the robins. They are usually here by March 11th, but I have not seen either bird, yet.

i had a couple of stray red wings flock with the starlings this winter. But we also had several sunny warm days and yesterday a flock of red wing blackbirds showed up. A hawk must have followed them and got one. Almost all my birds have been hiding since then a small bunch of pine siskins are in the tree but are hiding most of the time in the needles.

It sounds like a you have some common Redpolls passing through. Alot of the birds are starting to think about spring and changing their behavoir now. You'll see new birds migrating through. I've noticed the birds got alot more vocal in the last week or so. The male Cardinals and Blue Jays are singing. Yesterday I saw and heard male Horned Larks singing. Spring is on its way, its hard to believe when the forecast calls for 6-8" of snow tonight.

Annpan, It is really beautiful. I love the kind of snow that sparkles like diamonds in the evening under the lights. It is magical. There's nothing as cozy as a good snowstorm while it's happening. It negates any possibilities of having to run errands and opens up time to spend doing things that bring sheer pleasure...like reading ! When I can muster up the desire to bundle up, I love to go out at night right after a big snowfall , before any plows have come, and take a hike down the road past all the neighbors. Usually many are out, even if it's 11 at night, beginning to shovel or just to enjoy the sight and relieve their cabin fever. Everyone is so friendly and in a kind of festive mood, probably because we've all survived the onslaught of nature !

Nice crocus, I have a few but not a large group like that. All gone now of course. I do the same with my lilies, if I don't I'll end up trying to plant something. I can't tell you how many times I've pushed my shovel in the ground & heard that sickening crunch & known I've dug into bulbs. My daylilies are greening up nicely. Lost a few I got last year, but looks like everything else is coming up nicely. Awesome Blossom didn't come through the winter well, but it has never done well here so I dug it up just yesterday to give away. Most pitiful fans I've ever seen on a "mature" plant. My daffs are in full bloom right now & making a nice show, looks like some of my sdb iris are getting ready to bloom any day now. I'll try to take a few photos if I can get out between the rains. I think rain is predicted every day the next week except Saturday, & I can't believe how humid it was yesterday. Yuk. Does it sound like I'm getting tired of the rain. Shouldn't complain though, we haven't had the severe flooding like other parts of KY.

they'll be along soon hawkeye! We have tons now, only a few days after my OP. I think a couple said they were on their way to your neighborhood.

Now if only the juncos would leave, I'd be able to put away my heavy coat & gloves....Go north juncos!

I just went out to fill the seed feeder and heard the first red-winged blackbird call of the season. The call was missing a couple notes so it wasn't as obvious as it normally would be. I searched my neighbor's trees for the bird, as they like to sit at the tops of them. I found him sitting at the top of a utility pole. This is ten days later than last year's first sighting.

We one at my neighbors that never left! Waiting for the others to come back in full force THEN I will know it is spring here. The robins come early but the true warm up is AFTER the GROUP flock comes back to the pond behind me on her property.

I had 50 of them show up at the same time and scour the ground for food, albeit after a rain. ...was about 2 weeks ago.
