TRES - anyone seen this?

Today at the conservation area there were about 30 Tree Swallows landing and feeding off the ice. I have read about this before, but never witnessed it. There was plenty of open water, temp. almost 50 degrees F, but they were all feeding off the ice.

There are all kinds of little critters embedded in the ice and as it melts in the spring it`s a gold mine for a lot of birds. I have often been amazed at the insects that are moving about in water and on the ice at near freezing temps.

Yeah..when you go ice fishing one can see allot of critters,..that should given them the boost to come here! My houses are waiting.

I agree, bpath - but unfortunately, not all kitchens can access a corner from the other side. Our last house had a U-shaped kitchen - one corner was on an outside wall, the other had a bathtub on the other side of the wall. Our current kitchen is an L with an island, on an outside wall. This time there is a bathroom vanity on the other side of the wall. In fact, the reason there are SO many different solutions proposed for kitchen corners is because many of us don't have the option of eliminating them. I wracked my brain for months to best utilize the corners in our last kitchen. One was the angled corner described above; the other was a dead corner with drawers on both sides. There is no perfect corner solution for every kitchen - the best answer depends on what needs to be stored in that space.

Where TRES are aerial insectivores, I never would have guessed that they would eat insects frozen in the ice. It was quite a sight. I had to look it up when I got home to make sure I wasn't seeing things. That's when I read about it. I've been walking at this conservation area for close to 25 years and have never seen this before.
