Three Baby Blues have hatched.

Today was the day the Bluebird eggs were due to hatch. I check on the box this afternoon and three of the eggs have hatched. Hopefully by tomorrow there will be five baby Blues in there. Today was warm and sunny with abundant insects, but I'm keeping the mealworm feeder stocked as well. Another pair of HOSP showed up yesterday (they are after a different box). I'm letting them get attached to it before putting in the trap. Though I have put out the DRST as well.

Good to here someone has activity! You of course have read of my troubles with the swallows and the fact that my blues are wasting time and doing nothing.

1 TRES nest completed, 1 almost complete. This time last year I had a completed BB nest and 5 eggs. This year, not one completed BB nest and no absolute claims for the boxes. Why are they being so slow???? It's not much of a wonder why they suffer competition problems...how did they not go extinct during the decline of the 1800's? I've lost plenty of female BBs and nest attempts. Although every season got better with the exception of this year. Ahh, Time to quit rambling! Good luck! Heck, you're lucky to have them nesting! Mine are just wasting time and boring me.

Wonderful news Kendra! Hope you get those nasty HOSPs. I believe that my Bluebird babies have fledged now. I saw a fledgling in the tree close to the box yesterday, and I am not seeing the parents at the box much now. Odd thing though is that they are still coming to the box on occasion, and if I walk over to it, one of them is there talking to me immediately. Makes me wonder about what is going on inside the box, but I don't dare open it now. Normally, the young fledge fairly close together. What do y'all think?~`Angie

^^^ Hahaha...I once had to buy eggs at the market while my girls were molting, I brought them home and made a point to show the eggs to the girls to remind them what they looked like. Laying started up again shortly thereafter. :) Well...we checked both incubators and candled the eggs we could see into last night. A lot of them were clear, especially the Polish eggs. :( But I don't see my Polish ladies getting much action from my roos, the dumb boys! Other eggs have chicks, but I could not tell if they were alive or not, and how fully formed they are. No peeping or activity yet from any of the eggs, but they aren't due to hatch until beginning at 8PM Saturday night. If none of these hatch, I don't know what to think...I know that both of my roo boys are getting their job done and I don't think they have fertility issues, they are healthy fellas. We did change locations for the incubators this year, to my dining room table, in a corner of a room away from windows and doors to help protect from drafts. I THOUGHT I had a great spot, but if this batch doesn't work I'm going back to putting the darned things in the kitchen. :( On top of everything else, we are having weird weather here since yesterday, supposed to continue until Tuesday--wind, rain/hail, and tornadoes, of all things! If the power goes out, I have my broody hen contingency plan...Bear, Splash and Blue are all broody and would get to sit on the eggs. :) We checked the cam last night and have it all set up and ready to go, if hatching begins we'll fire it up and I'll notify everyone. Time will tell! Velvet !:>

You know, it was not expensive in money OR time to do this, it was pretty darned simple. :) DH got a PS EyeToy color camera for $5.00 at Gamestop, and YahooLive is the host for the cam, sound and chat, at no cost to us. My husband had the know-how to get things going, but you can find out online and it isn't difficult or complicated. The number of people viewing the cam and talking in chat crashes my husband's computer sometimes, but we just restart things and everything's fine. We wanted to hatch chicks anyway, so thought we'd share the experience. The cam just pointed through the viewing panes in the lid of the incubator, now we set it inside the brooder box. Baby chicks DO have a wonderful effect on all who gaze upon them, it's like Valium for your eyes. *L* And yeah, it is VERY remarkable that Chicken Sister has babies this late in life--but then, both of the boys LOVE her to distraction, you should have seen them run over and burble over her when we brought her back from the vet after her egg-binding adventure. What a couple of love-struck chuckleheads. :) It was very sweet, they missed her so! We'll be hatching again the weekend of June 21st, and will resume chickam then, if anyone wants to watch. We will have our incubators issues solved before we start more eggs. Velvet ~:>

Anyone have sucess hatching baby turkeys?

I let a broody (chicken) hen incubate my turkey eggs. This also made raising them a lot easier since she taught them to eat. When I raised my first group of turkeys (from MMM) I had the worst time with them. Getting them to eat was a nightmare and I was losing at least one a day. From now on, if I ever decide to raise turkeys again I will definitely let a chicken do the work. Interestingly, after my turkeys were about 8 weeks old, my broody turkey hen adopted them and she has been with them for well over 2 months now. Much better mommies than the chickens who seem to tire of their brood after 4-6 weeks (in my experience anyway).

Bandjzmom, When were the young due to fledge? If you believe some have fledged and you're days beyond when the last should have come out, it may be wise to check. If they are beyond their fledge date, you can't cause premature fledging. I've heard of fledglings getting things caught on their feet and being unable to get out of the box. I've had them fledge over a two day period, but never more than that. Hopefully all the young have fledged and the the parent birds are simply thinking about a second brood in the box. By the way, as of today I have four baby blues and one egg. Will leave the last egg for a few days and see if it eventually hatches.
