Non-Ripening Early Girl Tomatoes

I have an Early Girl tomato plant that is in a pot on my porch. When we first potted it, it grew tall and fast. Now it has fruit and the fruit is not ripening and the leaves are turning yellow from the bottom of the plant up. I cut off the leaves when they turn yellow (not sure if I should be doing this). New leaves are growing from the bottom of the plant, but not at the rate the others are turning yellow. The plant gets about 4 hours of direct sunlight. I water the plant everyday (about a gallon). The pot the plant is in is a 20 gallon pot. I have oregano, basil, cilantro and chrysanthemum flowers growing around the base of the plant. Does my plant have a disease? Am I over watering it? Is it getting enough sun? Are the other plants killing my tomato plant? Please help!

how much/often do you water? are you fertilizing?

Sounds as if your planter is over crowded and it definitely isn't getting enough sun - 6 hours minimum of good direct sun for tomatoes.

As to water, I'd say it isn't getting enough. All those plants are competing for the 1 gallon of water and that isn't enough for a 20 gallon container. It is best to water it deeply and thoroughly LESS often (till water runs out of the base of the planter) rather than in little bits of water daily. Shallow daily waterings promote shallow surface roots and that's where your yellowing leaves are coming from. If it is really hot you may still have to water daily but water till it comes out the bottom. And mulch the soil well around the plants to help retain moisture.

All those plants in there are also competing for nutrients and it needs feeding. I'd remove the herbs as they won't like the amount of fertilizer the tomato plant needs but it's up to you. Liquid fertilizer of your choice used at 1/2 strength of the label directions once a week works good for container plants.

Lastly, check the bottoms of all your existing fruit for blossom end rot - common in a stressed plant - and if any have it pitch them so the plant won't be wasting energy it needs to recover trying to ripen them.

MsFuzz, I only saved seed from my grandmother's tomato at first, and for many years. Large Red Cherry must have been in my garden for 10 years before I realized that it was an heirloom and I could save seed. In fact, it was the great Ben Quisenberry who saved LRC, I guess. He is the same person we have to thank for the Brandywine. There may not be a whole, heckuva lot of open-pollinated varieties I can grow. I almost need those thrive-on-abuse, lightening-quick hybrids but . . . not really. I don't think I've got a cross-bred EG. I don't think it is a mutant. I think (not sure) that I've got EG's mother. If the worker didn't remove the stamens from a flower on a plant that he/she was pollinating for a hybrid, that flower would probably self-pollinate. That's what tomatoes do. So, all the genetic material in the seeds from the fruit of that flower would be from the mother plant. How would they know that one of the fruits didn't have hybrid seeds inside? If the mother was a hybrid, I may be outta-luck using the mystery plant's seed but, I looked at information on tomato hybridizing (linked below). They say that, "Both parents should be pure, preferably being selfpollinated for more than six generations . . ." So, it sounds as tho' this should just be a normal non-hybrid plant. If there is something special about it, the earliness of fruit development might be it. I know that it ain't got no resistance to flea beetles!! (Now watch the plant patent police show up in my garden to seize the mystery plant! If I fall silent about this subject, you know that a judge has issued a gag order . . ! ;o) Steve it would probably take a gag order to shut me up about most anything . . . Heck, if you're getting tomatoes out of that pot on your first try, you're doing fine. As you read other posts here or in the FAQ page you'll quickly get ideas about how to do better next time. Keep in mind that you can still start another Early Girl from the nursery. We've got plenty of summer and fall left. Leaf curl can be caused by uneven watering but is a physiological reaction, and thus could be caused by other factors too. Cold nights (below 50) for example. While leaf roll isn't something you want to see, it isn't the end of the world. By way of example, I pulled a 1 lb 3 oz Brad's Black Heart of a heavily leaf curled plant last week. Yum it was tasty. Not bad for June! So obviously, leaf roll wasn't too big a deal. Be sure to take a look at the container forum for ideas about how to grow tomatoes successfully in containers. Most of mine are in ground, but I do have 11 plants growing in containers and they're doing fairly well. It just takes time to get figured out.

Yea, you are not alone! I plant 4th of July and Early Girls for my earliest tomatoes, and they are all coming ripe this week. My earliest this year was Campari, & Silver Fir Tree. My Sweet 100's are just ripening now also. They are normally one of the first to ripen! Seems like a mixed up season. Now everything is coming ripe all at the same time. I save the seeds from the best ones and the rest that we can't eat is a big give away... Paul

There's almost too many variables to comprehend that might explain it. I can start two "identical" seeds of the same variety, grow them side-by-side all season, and one will be stunted or sick or small-fruited, while the other will be big and healthy. Now, put a few miles between them, with changed growing methods and different caretakers, it would perhaps be more amazing if they'd turn out the same and not totally different! Overabundant water and bland temperatures will tend to make watery, mealy, mild-tasting tomatoes. Ones that take too long to grow and ripen can also be "blah." Oft-times the first ones to ripen on a given plant will be a little mealy and bland. Later on, flavor and texture may improve. Wind or manual plant agitation as well as temperature and humidity affect pollenization. More pollinated seeds in a given blossom may lead to bigger fruits? Soil fertilization may tend to promote foilage or blossoms over fruit. Pollen is very picky about its preferred temperature range. A cool spell after can really slow stuff down. More or stronger sunlight will really speed things up, while a little stress, like letting them dry out a bit, is said to enhance the flavors. As the weather changes from the ideal as the fruits grow, that will also affect things. More blossoms on a plant may tend to be smaller. It's as if the plant can only produce "X" pounds of fruit. Just a few blossoms, the individual fruits will be larger, while many blossoms may have to "share" the available plant resources and are thus smaller, but perhaps will also ripen faster. A greenhouse may help moderate temperatures and watering can be better controlled, but light intensity may be reduced and unless there's a breeze or you manually shake the plants to help pollenate, fruit-set may be lessened. These are just a few of the things that could create a lot of variability between growing out two seeds from the same batch or any two plants, for that matter. -Ed

Thank you for your help. I have watered it quite a bit (so the water comes out the bottom). I wish i could have the plant get more sunlight but what is has is all it can get. Hopefully the extra watering will help????

Since it is in a container, can't it be moved to a place that gets more sun? 6 hours really is the minimum requirement. I can guarantee you will get more tomatoes and they will ripen much quicker if you move it. ;)
