Partridge in a pear tree

Here's a strange happening in nature. I found this Ruffed Grouse, (most of us in Maine call this a partridge), stuck in a bush next to my house. He must have been there at least a couple days because it snowed the day before and he was covered in snow. I'm not sure if he jumped up to fly and got stuck in the crotch, or was he roosting there at night and died a natural death, fell and got caught. I hope the latter so he didn't suffer. I say "he" but I'm not sure of the sex. In my last picture tell me if he looks thinner than he should. I think of a Ruffed Grouse as being plumper.
